Because they can't and do not know how to make it.

I will not go deeper into this discussion, but i will just 1000% disagree with this claim!

Can't do and don't know how to make it? You're aware you're speaking about BMW and not about KIA or Hyundai?

They sure know and they sure can, they are not some incompetent idiots or a brand with only 20 years of history, but why they don't want is something we can discuss for days long... Is it the strategy or something else? I don't know and i don't bother myself with it. Would i like them to do it? Yes, to some level. But to say they cannot and they don't know is utter nonsense.

You mean how they bought a well established brand, that only needed money for R&D and needs no marketing whatsoever.

"only needed money for R&D"

?

You're confusing Rolls-Royce and Bentley. BMW got the rights to use the name and various other RR trademarks, pretty much everything else went to VW when RR&BMC was broken up (including my father). @chonkoa seemed to think BMW couldn't engineer a car to compete with the S-Class, yet they clearly can - as has been proven by the Phantom, the Ghost, the Wraith and the Dawn, and as has been proven by the construction of Rolls-Royce manufacturing Goodwood, and as has been proven by the record sales of the Rolls Royce brand under BMW's control.

The i8 was BMW trying to shift the arena from one that they can't compete in to something without defined metrics. BMW knew they couldn't compete with Audi R8, Porsche 911, Merc GT so they went the electric motor+ lawn mower engine route.

CS was another example or the Vision-luxury from BMW.

The AMG GT doesn't compete with the 911 or R8 or 570S or 570GT or LP580-2 either.

The AMG GT and the 911 are competitors, regardless of where the engine is placed

In what way are they competitors, the 911 and the other cars I mentioned are junior supercars, the AMG GT is a front engined GT that happens to be around the same price but in no way has the same performance or driver experience. It's like comparing apples and oranges, they are both fruit but other than that nothing else is the same.

Past results does not guarantee future success.

And, all that Mercedes "cachet" superiority talk is so funny to me, as BMWs and Audis look like BMWs and Audis, unlike Wagoner's Mercedes which look like Bentley wannabes, inside out....the exception being the AMG GT, which is a 911 wannabe...ahhh, and the GT Roadster, which is a 911 wanabe with a Mansory grill and air intakes.

Of course, the excuse is, the round vents where used on 60's Mercedes, but the sad cold truth is the Bentley influence is too obvious.

Also found funny how Mercedes fanboys laugh of BMW's lost sportiness, yet overlook Mercedes's lost over engineering and extreme reliability, which I found much more sad.

Isn't that a little like saying the 6er GC is a CLS wannabe? You could play that game for a long time..

I just meant styling wise..... Preposterous niche persecution is something all the German automakers are guilty of: ClS came before 6er GC and A7, X6 before GLE Coupé, A5 SB before 4er GT, etc

This is how it look when you produce diarreah from your fingers ladies and gentlemen.

Interesting. So because BMW is clearly no longer the end all in dynamics, you're trying to say Mercedes has lost their engineering? In what way have they lost their over engineering or extreme reliability? Prove that they had extreme reliability in the first place and how they lost it. Extreme reliability has never been the realm of any European car, but I'll wait to see what you have in the way of proof.

What Mercedes looks like a Bentley on the outside? Proof please.

I'll wait.

The latest Mercedes models have scored highly in customer satisfaction surveys as well as amongst the lowest problems per 100 vehicle. They might not be the best in the industry yet but are not far behind the leaders. In reliability they are better rated than both Audi and BMW with fewer problems per 100 vehicles.

I get that, but saying that current MB models look like Bentley wannabees styling wise, to use your words, is quite the exaggeration. I just don't see the connection, other than both being super luxurious. The vents; is that all? Same goes for the AMG GT and the 911 IMO... how are they alike "inside out"? I think it's cool that Mercedes have the guts to enter the segment. Sorry man, just gotta disagree with you there...

I'm waiting for the styling analysis between Mercedes and Bentley. I gotta see how Bentley's classic FWD proportions (except the real one, the Mully) and a RWD Mercedes look alike. Maybe the CLA looks like a Bentley to him?

Therein lies what a Mercedes has always been vs the rest of the European competition. They have rarely been as reliable as say a Lexus or Toyota, who have "extreme" reliability.

Mercedes used round vents several times in history: W123 for instance (1976-1984).

As well as the R107 SL and SLC and 230SL used round vents:)

Good point - but why did they bring them back?, the ones in the S class do remind me of its luxury competitors from Rolls-Royce and Bentley ...and I don't believe that is coincidence. But who really cares when all is said and done, the S class has a different feeling from a Bentley.

Looking at the modern Mercedes models, the SLS AMG was the first modern Mercedes that I can remember that started the resurrection of the round vents. So maybe it was brought back as it was used on older sports cars. Then followed 2011 SLK and 2012 R231 SL, and as well as the B-class, A-class and CLA, all have round vents.
