5 Series [Official] 2020 BMW 5 Series G30 LCI (Facelift)

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.
Everytime I see a review of this car, it makes me want want want. And what a lovely V8 rumble 👌🏾

If the next gen E63 is not getting the V8 engine then its gonna be failure. Make the full Ev or if not then put the V8 lol.

I was always intrigued by the upper end 5-series and E-class V8 models that looked like a base model but with massive power. It started in the early 90's with the E34 540i and the W124 420E, middleman V8 models that were nearly as fast as M5 and 500E models but were more discreet. Then subsequent E39 540i/W210 E430 models and then the E60 545i/ W211 E500 and leading to the F10 550i/W212 E500 with turbo V8s with a massive 300kw (408PS).

At one stage about 10 years ago I was considering buying either a 2005 E60 545i or a 2006 W211 E500. The E-class fascinated me as it had a huge 285KW 5.5 V8 and it looked like an E200 on the outside. Both cars sounded superb and went like stink. But then I had to move to work in Saudi Arabia and then didnt buy one.

When I bought my W211 320 CDI back in 2005 I considered a 420 CDI. A V8, 4 litre engine with 314 HP and a torque of 730 Nm… Al that in a car that weighed 1.890 kilogram 😊
It’s been in production for only a short time. I know stories of owners, telling how one transmission after another had to be replaced. It just couldn’t handle the sheer power.
If you let the rear trunk lid clean, nobody knew what you were driving. On the Autobahn it was like driving a car with never ending power, which ate Porsches and the likes for breakfast.

It did manage to keep-up with GTR, so that's high praise for the M550i. Sounds better than the M5.

I thought the 5-series wagon touring would struggle with the two-litre turbo and added weight of xDrive, but no, it doesn't.

Modern 2 cylinder petrol engines are very competent. Their drawbacks only make themselves shown when driving aggressively or flooring it from 60mph to triple digits. I owned a G20 X3 20i and for people that engine is more than plenty.

The 540d xDrive is mighty impressive.

I don't live in a part of the world which requires full-time 4wd systems like xDrive, but I sure would like to try it in snowy conditions and assess its effectiveness. Looks like a bit of fun.

Side note: this is one of two engine specs I would go for in something like an X5 or X7. Plenty of pulling power right where you need it.

Hitting my late 30s this year. The emerging old fart in me would love a lazy and torque heavy diesel.

I test drove a 540d xdrive with adaptive dampers a couple of years ago. What a perfect premium car it was. Comfortable but not sloppy, dynamic but not on-edge. The sense of ease is impeccably thought out and engineered.

An LCI G30 540i with the M-Sport pack is pretty much the Goldilock choice of 4-door luxury sedans. It's just right.
Unless you can get the M550i… a weapon

a time when 300hp meant something.
