I agree that Alfa was chronically mismanaged, but don't fully agree on statement that Sergio's investments were a waste per se - as the platform was never fully utilized.
Lots of money was invested in Giorgio platform - only for it to be used in 4 vehicles (and only 2 of them Alfa-Romeo). I wonder if the situation would be different if:
1. More AR vehicles were introduced, in the segment above Giulia i.e. 5 Series, X5, X4 and X6 competitors, and possibly 4 Series competitor. Using the platform for 7, instead of 2 models, would help in bringing the costs down, and speeding up production.
2. The platform was used for all other Maserati vehicles (that brand also feels mismanaged to me)
3. The platform was used for other brands (Chrysler, Dodge), to an extent.
4. Another platform was used to FWD vehicles (Giulietta, Compact and Subcompact Crossovers).
Basically, I'm thinking of following VAG strategy of 2 main platforms, like utilized at Audi: MQB for A3 and lower segments, and MLB for A4 and above.
We agree. But since it wasn’t utilized further I deemed it a waste. The fact that it couldn’t accept a V8 (which was known from the start) or electrification was a major failure but it still could’ve been used more widely.
A heavily modified version of it will live on though. That’s now named STLA Large and is under the next-gen Grand Cherokee. That platform is set to be used on several vehicles so at least we know mistakes will not be repeated.
