Well, in all honesty I must say the Z4 is infinitely better effort by her.

I don't like how the car's front looks dead flat from the side view, the stretched/malformed kidneys and the front lights that remind me of Dodge instead of BMW.
The side profile is relatively the strongest part but still nothing special. The rear is OK. The rear lights could have more interesting graphics but I kind of like how the part of the "bootlid" with the BMW emblem is in angle compared to the part below. Nevertheless, I'd say design-wise all current production BMWs have better, more resolved rear-ends.

Well, perhaps that's what sets us apart from many other forums. We like to use our brains and form our own opinions instead of blindly worshipping all that comes out of Munich, Ingolstadt or Stuttgart and correspondingly bashing every car/concept from non-German brands.

If BMW has a concept SUV is not good, if you have a radical roadster and beautiful as this, it is not good, nothing is good for you guys
This concept could well be a Z2 or Z6 (not decipher the size) just to add a windshield production and pulling down certain minimum details.
Anybody can go crazy with this car.

The fact that one designer was only needed to design the lights' graphics is driving me nuts.

I don' think that design has moved so much that every little detail matters. Yet, I think that we focus on the details (like the lights' graphics) and not on the whole design as a total...

It's not blind worship. It's expected that folks won't like certain cars. Unfortunately this seems like an everyday thing now.

• I don't like the lights
• It looks fat
• It's too sleek
• It's got a line on the side
• The wheel are to big
• The gas pedal looks to hard to press
• The car weighs one more pound then I want it too
• The seats are made for fat people
• The rear lights point in the wrong direction
• The radio buttons aren't made of gold
• Why does the same car company have the same grill
• Their concept is to futuristic

I mean come on. Folks complain about any and everything. It's like watching a big lady cry on Oprah because the store ran out of donuts.

It a concept for heaven sakes...Just point out ideas. It's not like it's going for production tomorrow.

its show-casting how the layered design language can look on a traditional car (without the fancy stuff of the other vision concept)

You know I was wondering what was the point of this concept. Yeah sure the ConnectedDrive tech' is the main reason, but from a design standpoint I wasn't too sure. ...but you hit the nail on the head jack!

We've seen this layered sheet metal stuff before, namely the VED Concept, but the implementation of the layering theme wasn't even close to production-worthy. With this new concept, the layering aspects look as good as real and roadworthy. Just have a look at how the sheet metal that forms the 'humps' on the rear-deck fall down the side of the car and wrap-around the lights to form the rear bumper. Very fascinating to study that! Just looking at that rear corners of the car, it looks as if the car is moving in such a motion that the side sheet metal is peeling off to reveal the tail lights.

Also, by using this layering technique, they can - for example - give the rear deck and boot-lid more presence and attention without actually having to make it bulge out like boot-lids of the previous generation 7er and 6er (which were highly criticized). You can see that boot-lid pushing its way out from underneath those humps, and that instantly gives it added attention and emphasis, but maintains a sleek and sculptured look, rather than a big, round mass so eloquently referred to as the Bangle Butt.

I look forward to more visually engaging and challenging designs from the next generation of BMW's. Scott was definitely right when he stated that Chris Bangle has left a lasting impression and approach to design.

There are certain cars that "most" people here will not complain about (Z4, M3, S-class, 5 series etc.). It's fine that people love those cars, but other cars and concepts are subjected to constant "petty-ness". That's all I'm saying.

Well, I don't think it's fair to say that those who criticise a car are just being nitpicky. In this case especially it's even expected as one of the main purposes for concepts is to create discussion. Therefore they are even more likely to have a divided reception.


Anyway, back on topic.

Good work with the design analysis there Shameel. I'm still not exactly thrilled by the car (I don't hate it either) but at least it makes a bit more sense.

Sure, it's a concept car, and that's why it is worrying to me. Because the design ideas that are presented with the concept cars will sooner or later make it to production. If not all of them, then most of them.

And now in regards to lights. Look at Audis and their obsession with christmas-tree-like LED lights. They even have a different LED design for each model. Also BMW has stepped up the game with their LED tubes rear lights.

I don't want to know what keeps BMW from having even more fancy LED design in their front and rear lights...

Whatever! give me one good reason why BMW made this.
Give us something we can actually buy in a near future. BMW are focusing on the wrong things, no one is going to be impressed by this unless you are hardcore BMW fan..

There's several good reasons why BMW made this car, but it's all in the English press release, which I doubt you've read. There's several pioneering stuff in this car showcasing the high tech hardware BMW is able to create and that we will soon (like, within years) see in production cars. Stuff like the infotainment system, all new Head Up Display, Connected Drive, etc.

All highly interesting, but of course you only focus on the looks and whether the car has a NA high revving engine or not. If either is not the case, you don't like the car and people who do like it are blind BMW fanboys. We get the rhetoric by now.

The exterior design sort of leaves me cold still, but the futuristic gadgets are totally cool!!
And I'm not trying to defend this car in any way btw, I'm way past that. People can make up their own minds, but when someone blindly says that BMW focusses on the wrong things because a concept is not to his personal liking? Well, .......

I am sure it will not make it into production but nonetheless, I find it appealing albeit not at the same level as the CS.

Looks incredible, perfect future Z2 whith the obvius changes, see in your mind whith the production windshield and a few more details, has the charm and the touch that I expected from the new small BMW roadster.

I am contradicting myself, after reading Scott27's post and after I saw the vid you posted klier, I myself see elements of the concepts design as a good and in some ways brilliant indication of absolute excellent future design elements that are going to be introduced in future models. There is flared and beautiful integrated wheel arches and also the 'shark nose' of old in a new modern guise, wheels that fill the arches and strong shoulder lines that lends a true sportiness - the essence of past and future elements blended together in a daring, yet somehow familiar + SPORTY driving machine, that is BMW So...fcuk JOY sorry! I just had to express myself...
