E-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz E Class Convertible

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a range of executive cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in various engine and body configurations. Produced since September 1953, the E-Class falls as a midrange in the Mercedes line-up, and has been marketed worldwide across five generations.
The hollow feeling for me is when you knock on the door, you get a hollow sound. Less sound defeaning material, less thick plastics and materials used in the door. Possibly to save weight in the doors, but they feel cheap, to me. Also quite flexible. you can push in the door panels of the S very easily.

I think you guys are going to have get over this. Mercedes can't really build a tank anymore inside and out, no reasonably priced car is built to those old standards anymore.

It's really strange that you would think the new models which weigh about 300 kg more than the W124 would be more tank like when you close the door but it's the total opposite. The older Mercedes models were built to last and built impeccably like it was bomb proof.

To me this talk about felt lesser quality is a non issue. The W123 drivers described the W124 as cheap, plasticly and without the quality they were used to. History repeats, so it seams...

I think if you compare to the W124 firstly I don't think a W124 had a tank feel at all.

Secondly the New E is probably the same size or bigger then the W126 S class of that time.Add to that all the crazy technology these new cars have so I don't think you can compare these two cars these new cars have so much more technology and as we all know electronics are heavy and imagine all the extra wires and cables must be a extra 20 or so kg alone..

As for the current E class I really don't get where people find it low quality or weaker compared to a w212 E class I owned a W212 for about 3 years it had no issues and was a strong solid car no doubt but I don't see where the W213 is weaker or less stronger as to say.Yes the doors are not as heavy but that does not mean it's weaker it's aluminium or light weight steel used.

In terms of fit and finish and quality I find the w213 is ahead of the w212 let's not even go to design that's like 2 generations ahead.

Just for example I was at BMW yesterday and the 7 series door feels even lighter then my E and we know BMW is using light weight materials so point is all companies are trying to cut weight .I definitely do not agree that the w213 is inferior to w212 in build quality and finish.

For me it's not even the hollowness as it is the on the E class here, unless you get the leather option, the door panels are not trimmed in a soft material, they are trimmed in the same plastic as used on the bottom part of the dash. Same with the coupe. The convertible has a little leather from the armrest due to the different design. IT LOOKS and FEEL CHEAP, especially when you are talking about a $55k car.

Precisely.

And when I speak of build and finish issues I'm not just talking about the hollow feeling of the door panels when you knock on them, I'm talking about the flex you experience when you press against the transmission tunnel with your knee, as some people do. The creaks you get when you press against the trim around the climate and radio controls. The movement that you feel on the top door trim piece when you rest your arm on the window ledge, the creak from the door handle in hot weather as you pull the door shut, the lack of material lining in the door storage pockets, the ill fitting felt lining at the base of the armrest storage etc etc.

The S obviously doesn't suffer most of these issues, but theyre pretty widespread across the range.

This hollowness issue, even though it may be an annoyance to MB purists, but given the ecological requirements nowadays, it is unfortunately something we may have to live with (blame Aluminium)..however, the main thing for me is that the interior still feels solid as fortuner pointed out. As for some who have experienced negatives with the new gen models I would surely put it down to the early dodgy batches of production, I can surely say that these issues are few and far between..

Some interesting material concerning engines coming in the E Cabrio :)

A shame there is no V8 engine - I was hoping an E50 would use a detuned V8

I don't even mind there not being an E63 coupe/convertible, the problem is its little C brother gets the option of a 8 cylinder engine, while this doesn't.

I mean, they are even planning to produce an all terrain E63!

So is that 429hp or 449hp in the above info? Hopefully we'll see this at Frankfurt right? the I6 will need more power in the E Sedan if the M550i and S6 are the competition for the E50.
