Anniversary for the successful new Gran Turismo

25,000th Panamera built in the Leipzig Porsche factory

Stuttgart/Leipzig. The new fourth Porsche model series is enjoying such popularity that only ten months after the start of sales, the Leipzig factory of the Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart has already built the 25,000th Panamera. In addition to the Panamera, the new generation of the sporty, all-terrain vehicle – the Cayenne – is also being produced in the same facility in the State of Saxony.

The anniversary vehicle, a ruby-red Panamera with a particularly efficient 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine (300 hp), will be delivered to a customer in the USA. “The benchmark performance of our Panamera V6 models wins over our customers worldwide. Even in the USA, a country with a preference for V8 engines, they impress with their efficiency and sportiness. The 4-door combines these aspects with the comfort and exclusivity of the luxury class,” says Porsche Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Bernhard Maier.

The fourth series has been on the market since September 2009, with the 400-hp strong 8-cylinder variants of the Panamera S and Panamera 4S, as well as Panamera Turbo (500 hp). Since May 2010, the Panamera and Panamera 4 have supplemented the product range with their V6 engines.

That's even more successful than I had anticipated. 25,000 cars in ten months is mighty impressive for sucha an expensive car. That should pacify the dissenters who would keep quiet about the design or hatchback.

I am glad it is a success, which naturally translates to a better looking MKII :D

I hate to disappoint and rain on your thoughts, but according to Automobile Magazine (I think, it was the June 2010 edition), since VW bought Porsche, VW is planning on discontinuing the Panamera, or use the Audi MLP architecture. VW figures since it is not only too expensive to produce a stand alone chassis for the Panamera, but it's too heavy to achieve a fuel economy that meets their expectation as well as Euro/US regulations. If that is true, then it's a shame and an even more compromised Porsche, especially when I'm really warming up to it more and more with each day, especially in 4 and 4S guise. I'll try to dig up the article to substantiate this post when I get a second.
:t-cheers:

Does anyone knows if there are any plans for a Panamera Turbo S?. What could be the power and times from 0 to 100 km/h?.

I hope VAG throw the Panamera a lifeline in the shape for co-developing it's platform into a Bentley or Lamborghini, I know there is an opinion that Audi MLP is the logical choice but the Panamera chassis is too good to throw on the scrap heap and both Bentley and Lamborghini are more expensive brands to start with which could offset the outlay by demanding more money in the first place.

What is needed is more models based on the one platform and no other manufacturer has this experience better than VAG.

When Porsche released the specs for the Panamera I was one of the first one to say that there is more to come. With only 500hp the Turbo is rather modest in it's power, but it's more than fast enough at 0-100km/h in 3.8sec. Porsche never overpower their car and really didn't need to give the Panamera a bigger punch since the car was more than fast enough with 500hp. Still, it's a big car and could use more thrust. I argued that the real Panamera will be the facelifted one.

If there's something that Porsche master better than rivals then it must be technical upgrades for the mid cycle facelifts. The Panamera Turbo is destined for 525hp engine for the facelift. What engine that will be is a tough question though because the current 4.8l engine is the same one in the Cayenne Turbo and was given a DI upgrade about two years ago, but have been in service since the introduction of the Cayenne, in 2003. There is a likelihood that Porsche will keep the engines for the facelift but boost output by 10-15hp while cutting weight elsewhere on the car.

The Turbo S is a quick affair. Porsche can simply use the 550hp engine that was used by the mk.1 Cayenne Turbo S. Fall next year would be a perfect time because the new M5 will be making it's début around that time.

For the Panamera Turbo there is an option called "Powerkit Panamera Turbo".
Here is the description of this option on the Porsche car configurator website:
"Power upgrade to 397 kW (540 hp). Modifications include exhaust turbocharger with new turbine wheels in titanium/aluminium, modified engine management and brake cooling, new engine-bay styling with throttle valve cover including badge in carbon, titanium coloured intake system with inlays in carbon and silver turbo logo as well as Sport Chrono Package Turbo (order. no. 640). Note: available from approx. 09/2010"
From what I saw on their site, the standard Panamera does 100km/h in 4.2 s while the the Panamera with this pack can do it in 4.0 s. This optional extra also adds 70 Nm of torque (770 Nm compared to 700 Nm)

The ultimate fate of the Panamera has been subject to plentiful speculation recently. Yes, the car has indeed been quite successful. And that is something that has left many industry observers and car fans alike quite surprised.

The underpinnings of the Panamera are formidable and thus deemed as a suitable basis for the reported upcoming MSP (RWD and AWD) upon which a 4 door Lamborghini and/or a new flagship Audi (A9 and/or successor to the current A8) + a successor to the Bentley Continental/Flying Spur line could be developed.

But-is the current MLP developed by Audi RWD compatible ? Or is it merely configurable as FWD + AWD ? Should the former be true, it could be envisaged that the current Panameras' platform will be discontinued after the current models' life cycle comes to an end. It will also be interesting to see if the Panameras' sales are effected by the introduction of Audis' A7, especially in S7 or RS7 form. For me, an S7 with the new 4.0 TFSI V8 would constitute a very strong argument against the Panamera S, as would an RS7 versus the Panamera Turbo.

An Audi platform that does both rwd and awd, best not discuss such things as it would put the willies up the obvious competition. ;)

We have discuss/debate this just idea for a couple of years on forums and the odd thing is that it never fully dies away. I wonder why that is? ;)

Germanys' Autozeitung automotive magazine,AUTO ZEITUNG.de - Auto Test, Auto News & Service | Erlkönige & Tuning | Elektro-Autos & Vergleichtest | autozeitung.de, has published a brief article in which it is stated that VW Group CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn has delegated the development of the MSP (Modular Standard Platform-RWD and AWD) as well a new mid-engine sportscar platform to Porsche.
The development of the MSP will surely encompass the evolution of various Panamera components. Lamborghinis' production Estoque 4 door coupe/sedan may be the first VW Group automobile to utilize this platform.

Sounds like that lifeline I mention has indeed proven to be true. Now to speculate as to the models which it will spawn. ;)

P.S.
BTW this will only be the start of it, if this venture proves successful then expect this chassis to be as modular as the MLP is, meaning we will probably see Audi adapting it to encompass more models further down the range and a switch from fwd to rwd for the more normal models in the range. I know, far into the future this but still.

It can be speculated that Porsche and Bentley will be drawn closer together with regard to the development of new models. The new MSP evolution of the Panamera platform would be an appropriate basis for an all-new (not the recently facelifted) Continental/Flying Spur line. Far more appropriate than the current VW Phaeton-based underpinnings. As mentioned before, the new Lamborghini sedan/coupe will also be a prime suspect for the MSP. As for Audi, it could be assumed that their MLP as used in the A4/A5/A6/A7 will remain the mainstay platform for some time. It will also be the basis for the successor to the VW Phaeton, methinks. An MSP based Audi ? Perhaps an A9 will be developed after all.

On a slidding scale with comfort at one end and sportiness at the other it's easy to see which premium brands in VAG's portfolio share the most common ground for the future models that might be planned.

Comfort : Bentley - Audi - Porsche - Lamborghini : Sportiness

Audi and Porsche are in the middle and share similar values of wanting to appeal to a greater audience, the same is true when you look at where these brands price their models at, Bentley and Lamborghini are generally at the very top of the scale with both Porsche and Audi having a large percentage of models in similar price brackets. Does this mean that both are too close to share platforms and development, would it mean that one brand would harm the sales of the other? Personally I doubt that, look at the Cayenne/Touareg/Q7 as an example, all three are very successful and most people view them entirely differently, yet here they will probably be closer than any other future project such is the role an SUV must meet. This MSP platform would be great for all brands that will receive it and I am sure their is enough unique values within each brand make them different.

The future is bright methinks. ;) At least Audi aren't being sidelinned completely as they will continue to develop the mid sized platform.

Report: Porsche working on a long wheelbase (LWB) version of the Panamera

It appears that Porsche wants to expand the Panamera range with a new model! According to media reports, Porsche is working on a long wheelbase version of the Panamera in order to satisfy demand for greater rear seat legroom for markets such as China and North America. Insiders confirmed the fact that the Panamera LWB will be extended by almost 120 mm, which means that the car will have a total length of 3040 mm, according to an Autocar report.

Still, the newcar will be shorter than the long wheelbase version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class which has a total length of 3165 mm, but we have to admit that both cars have a different design which means that the interior space will be almost the same.
Set to go on sale in 2012, the new Panamera LWB will also come with a new design as the German manufacturer is planning to refresh its first four-doorsedan with a facelift. Until the Panamera LWB will make its debut, Porsche is planning to roll out the Panamera Diesel as well as the Panamera S Hybrid, its second hybrid vehicle after the Cayenne S Hybrid.

Not that I anticipated this but the car is selling extremely well and is being both used as a GT and a chauffeur driven car depending on the customers. So bring on the leg stretcher for 2012.
