Taycan [Official] Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan is a battery electric luxury sports sedan and shooting brake car produced by Porsche.
I perceive it as being the best 4 door automobile currently offered by a German manufacturer. By quite some margin, in fact.

You know I am a fan of Taycan and EVs. And if I hadn't experienced M5 CS I would have agreed. But having driven both, the title of best driver’s German 4 door (possibly ever in the history of German 4 doors) goes to M5 CS. And "by quite some margin in fact" :).

And don't get me wrong I wouldn't even cast a second glance at a lesser 5er (even M5) over a Taycan. But the CS is a different beast.

Yes, BMW appears to have created "a DRIVERS' masterpiece" with the M5 CS. I couldn't comment as I haven't driven one, but I'll trust the accounts of those who have. Alas, it's a car that strikes me as being (I can only suspect) "full-tilt martial". I no longer possess the "high performance driving prowess" that I may have possessed years ago (even having dabbled a bit in kart racing when it became really envogue here in Germany back in the 1990s'). Too much for this ol' guys' blood pressure nowadays ;).

I will say that I like the G30/31 5ers in general. They're a bit "Old School BMW"-in a very good way. The upcoming i5 could be quite something, I imagine. Especially the full-fat "M" version.

Ha, I don't think I ever possessed it! :) And yes, I am being made well aware of the vagaries of my passing years.

I will ad one more thing about the CS - it is a feast for the tactile senses even pottering along.

Totally right, and not only by German brands. Designwise and tech the best out there right now. Even though they should still work on range and software.

Yeah, M5 CS best atempt for closing the ICE era. But difficult to be desired designwise as it‘s just a regular sedan with some Skoda Octavia vibes IMO.

Indeed, Porsche will hopefully address range and software deficits quickly. Nevertheless, the Taycan has been a massively successful automobile for Porsche-and I can only imagine that the legions of those smitten by it will only grow as its' few "bugs" are eradicated and interesting updates appear onstream. Maybe they'll even address those somewhat disappointing (a bit "cheap appearing") lower B-pillar covers. And I wonder whether we'll eventually see some sort of "Turbo RS" featuring ca. 650kW in boost mode... Just for giggles.

It would be necessary 1100 kilowatts (or is it 1.1 megawatts?) to recharge a Taycan Turbo S from 0 to 100% in just five minutes.

Visited my local Porsche Centre yesterday and had a poke around a few Taycans. Had a coffee with someone from sales, specced up a model, and booked a test drive for next week. On a personal level, this could be the end of one era, and the start of another...

Which model are you considering Betty?

The RWD Taycan Saloon. In all the videos I've seen they say it's the one to get. It has the biggest range, best steering feel, and it's lighter. I just need to see whether it's fast enough. It doesn't need to be stupidly fast. If it doesn't feel underpowered, then that's fast enough. I did consider the Sport Turismo, but I think I prefer the normal saloon.

Two weeks ago I wasn't even considering a BEV. However, the sheer inevitability of having to buy an EV at some point in the future has meant I've been taking a particular interest in them, and I'm starting to see the appeal. As a BMW fan, I've obviously taken a look at the iX, but the interior leaves me completely cold. The materials are good, but the layout is truly awful and feels very cheap. The UI of iDrive8 is a massive downgrade compared to iDrive7, also. As a life-long BMW fan, once again they don't offer anything that appeals to me in the segment I'm looking at. So I'm off to Porsche.

Will you be test driving any other variants? I'd be very interested to hear your take, as I've never driven the RWD. These guys were particularly unkind to the RWD and they specifically noted they were at odds with most other reviews to date and explained the reasons for their views.

I didn't consider the RWD for two reasons:
1. Level of performance is not what I wanted.
2. By the time I priced the vehicle with what the specifications I wanted, the 4S and GTS made much more financial sense due to their higher standard inclusions.

I have sold my 4S CT and should be getting my GTS sedan within the next two weeks.

Did you look at the i4 M50?

No, just the RWD, and I've made it clear I don't want to drive anything other than that because the RWD will probably just feel slow in comparison. I'm under no illusions that the RWD will not be neck-snappingly quick. I'm more interested in getting the "Porsche" driving experience in the way I remember it in the Boxster. If it gives me that, I'll be happy.

I will watch that video with interest this evening. Will be curious to see why they didn't like it.

I haven't read this thread much but maybe you've already shared your experiences on the Taycan. I'll have a look through this thread later.

What spec is your GTS, and what was your 4S CT?

In Holland, even when I've added nearly €30,000 of options to the RWD, it's still nearly €20,000 more for the 4S to the same spec. I want to keep the price of the Taycan within a reasonable amount. I've negotiated an 8% discount on the selling price, which I believe is good. In the UK you would be laughed out of the showroom if you so much as mentioned the word "discount", and that was the case before the chip shortage, never mind during it. Wait time would be one year for the Saloon, and "Summer 2023" for the Sport Turismo.

Did you look at the i4 M50?

No. I've already got a G21 330e Touring which will be staying, and a G80 M3 due to be built in a few weeks, so I didn't want another BMW product. As I've also got a W206 C-Class due in August, and the R8 V10, and four cars is the limit to what I can fit in my drive/garage, one car will have to go. It looks like it'll be the R8...

Anyway, no, I didn't consider the i4 of any iteration. I want the Taycan because it is just so desirable and looks like something from the future. A regular BMW sedan, but with a battery instead of an ICE, just doesn't tick that box. BMW's conventional models like the M3 are great. Their "future" models, like the iX and i4 just leave me utterly cold. I don't like the new interiors either. I'm afraid they may lose me as a customer if it continues. Add to that the price of the i4 M50 with a few options is not too far away from the base price of a Taycan, then it's a no-brainer to go for the Porsche.

Have you checked when the LCI of Taycan is due? I suppose some big improvement in battery technology to be available with the LCI (if there is such at all).

I have wondered when it will come. I would imagine some point in 2023, which means I may be lucky as if I placed an order it's estimated I'll take delivery in one year. Maybe somebody reading this knows?

It appears that a Taycan LCI is scheduled for the 2024 MY. It has been speculated (mentioned in some Porsche forums, I recall) that the LCI would encompass little more than an expansion of the colour palette, perhaps slightly modified skirts/aprons and lamps and a new rim option or two. No modification to sheet metal is anticipated.
Of course, ongoing technical updates (OTW as well as some that may require a trip to the authorized shop) will continue be featured.

Porsche has a pretty full plate over the course of the next 3-4 years. The e-Macan presentation, the e-718 Boxster/Cayman successors, a significantly facelifted ICE Panamera, the 992.2 + e-Hybrid version and a possible "Dakar" derivative, the large "Landjet segment" entry...and maybe...concept presentations of a new electric hypercar and/or a smaller sub-Taycan PPE electric sedan/sedoupe (BIG question mark here).
