Polestar 2 Polestar 2

The Polestar 2 is a battery electric 5-door liftback marketed by Polestar, an affiliate of Geely Holding and Volvo Cars. Based on the CMA platform, production began in March 2020 at the Luqiao CMA Super Factory in Luqiao, Zhejiang, China.
I agree with many points you’re making just not the ICE pig argument. I’ve driven it and the car is really good! But that’s my opinion - hence why I stated the review wins over Tesla and the other BEVs.
How it drives is just one aspect, right. The car has poor efficiency - 37kwh/100miles - far worse than a LR Model 3. I am guessing the ICE SUV platform with 500+lbs extra weight and a brick like aero from the SUVish form factor is responsible. Add that to the half baked charging network and I can see why people are not rushing to buy one despite other plus points.

As for reviews and wins. Since someone bought up IPace, I was looking it up on wiki. Just take a look at the number of awards and wins the Ipace has -

All to what end, besides showing how ducking useless that stuff is.

Anyway, good luck. I like Volvo/Polestar. I like that they committed to electrification early despite the missteps. I get emails with awesome lease deals on the P2 (< $450/month). I would be lying if I said I didn't entertain the thought at those prices. But the above factors stop me from ever getting serious. I want them to succeed, cause choice is good.

Any advice for Jaguar?
Close shop? ...and start a restomod business.

Again, I agree with you on most points (these titles don't mean much) but I will stay firm on the quality of the product.

Look at the stats of all VW MEB cars: ID.4, Enyaq, Q4 e-tron are all outclassed by the Polestar 2. Real-world range, performance, price, weight, high-quality components, infotainment, OTA. I cannot think of one data point where they win. Even the German magazines rate the car higher than the TM3. It objectively cannot be the product as you state. It must be something else. What it is I don't know.

FYI drag coefficient is 0,28 (same as ID.4; ID.3 is 0,26; TM3 is 0,23); the 408 hp version weighs 2123 kg, the 230 hp version should be 100 kg less making it lighter than the MEB cars. The charging network is also the same as the competitors (save Tesla with the SC).

Let us just say the Polestar 2 is doing well for an electrified ICE. But I wholeheartedly agree this should have been a Volvo Polestar. With the Volvo name, legacy, dealer network, familiarity, etc.

At least it's doing better than DS, which is near absolute death.

I wonder whether polestar will revert back to becoming a performance brand once the majority of Volvo models are BEVs/hybrids.

I don't know how the MEB cars are priced in Europe, but in US, ID.4 is ~40-50% cheaper than P2 (40-45k vs 60k). So I don't know why anyone would think just bettering the MEB cars is good enough? But even there, ID4 is actually more efficient and out ranges P2, so it doesn't even do that convincingly.

And now it will have to contend with Mach E, Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 all of which better it and cheaper fighting for the non Tesla piece of the pie.

And to add to it's misery, even Volvo XC40 Recharge which is pretty much the same car in a more popular SUV format is cheaper (53k).

Sure the P2 has a nice interior and UX, but clearly that alone is not enough. I think there is a lesson in there somewhere for other premium manufacturers betting a nice interior will alone do the job.

Polestar 2 here is more like 10-20% more expensive than stuff one may cross-shop here. I actually see quite a few around, which doesn't mean they're popular in general, but locally it does mean they're leveraging the Volvo connection, as Volvo's do well locally. I personally don't like it... the saloon ass doesn't work with the rest of the car.... if it were an estate/tourer, I reckon they'd get a lot more takers here.

I don't know, these crossovers are all the hype now, and surely more popular than an Estate (particularly worldwide).

In terms of automotive exterior design, the Polestar 2 remains an absolute masterpiece...

...in terms of it's purity, clarity and total absence of questionable elements of afterthought. Nothing needs explanation.

I'll be looking very forward to what I hope will be worthy encores in the form of the upcoming 3, 4 and 5 model lines.

Polestar 2 Facelift Spied For The First Time With Close To Zero Camo [UPDATE]
The electric liftback received software updates this spring.

Update: We just received 18 additional spy photos of another prototype, available to view in the gallery below.

In the spring of this year, Polestar gave the Polestar 2 a massive software update which brought many improvements for the electric vehicle. The exterior, however, was left unchanged but it seems that the Swedish manufacturer is preparing a facelift for the zero-emissions liftback after all. A new batch of spy photos shows a prototype of the model testing with very minimal amounts of camouflage.
As you can clearly see by the shots, this is a test car as stated on the front doors. Our spies caught it in the Austrian Alps earlier today undergoing pre-production evaluations on public roads. There’s some disguise covering the front fascia and we suppose Polestar will give the model a new grille design. There could be other changes to the front bumper and the panel about the grille, though it is difficult to tell from these early photos.

Nothing seems changed on the side, aside from the wheels which are covered with silver tape. Most likely, it is not simply hiding a new wheel design as it seems that there is some sort of measuring equipment with sensors attached to the alloys. Maybe the Swedish automaker will be implementing minimal touches to further improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics. As a side note, the wheels were wrapped in 19-inch Michelin Primacy tires measuring 245/45.

For the 2023 model year in the United States, the Polestar 2 is available with a starting price of $48,400 for the single-motor version, while the dual-motor variant kicks off at $51,900. Both prices are before the applicable $1,400 destination charge and Federal Tax Credit valued at $7,500. Depending on the market, the Polestar 2 can be now ordered with an upgraded heat pump designed for better cold-weather performance, new exterior design options, new wheels, new colors, and a more advanced air quality sensor.
Polestar 2 On The Road:

It will be interesting to see whether this visual upgrade for the Polestar 2 will also bring hardware improvements or new software updates for improved efficiency.

This is the danger with these heavy electric cars weighing several tons, which nobody talks about. These heavy beasts also destroys the roads, not very green, is it?

Electric vehicles offer a truly clean-sheet approach to developing a vehicle's powertrain, which is why some automakers opt to develop single-motor EVs that are front-wheel drive, and others build rear-wheel-drive EVs—a more entertaining prospect as far as we're concerned. The Polestar 2 was one such EV in the former category, but now that's changed; the all-electric Swedish automaker has announced the single-motor 2024 Polestar 2 will go rear-wheel drive, and all trims get power and tech upgrades for the new model year.

Copying The Polestar 3 SUV
The more obvious visual changes to the 2024 Polestar 2 include its new mug that now sports even more driver-assistance hardware, including a forward-facing camera and radar sensor in its nose panel, like the recently-revealed Polestar 3 SUV that's also due for production later this year. The 2024 Polestar 2 also grabs the 3's Performance Pack wheel design.

More Power
The driving dynamics of the new 2 may improve, as Polestar has introduced upgraded electric motors and inverters in every variant of the sedan, boosting efficiency, range, and power in a rear-wheel-drive format, and the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive 2 will now be more rear-biased in its power delivery as well.
The single motor boosts its power from 231 horsepower up to 299 hp, and a whopping increase in torque from 243 lb-ft to 361 lb-ft. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive 2 hops from 408 hp up to 421 hp now, and leaps from 467 lb-ft of torque up to 546 lb-ft. For efficiency, the dual-motor 2 can now disengage its front motor in certain scenarios. With the optional Performance Pack, which includes Brembo brakes, Öhlin dampers, and 20-inch forged alloy wheels, the 2024 Polestar 2 is available with 455 total horsepower. For context, the pack will save you 0.2 seconds to 60 mph (i.e., 4.1 seconds to 60mph) over the standard dual-motor model.

Range Improvement
The new motors and inverters make for better efficiency claims, as Polestar now says the long range dual-motor is expected to get around 270 miles and the long-range single-motor 2 is now expected to get around 300 miles of total range on single charge, the latter thanks to an increase in battery capacity to 82 kWh. Max charging speed for the long-range single-motor has improved to a max of 205 kW of direct current.

The long-range, dual-motor version now includes the Pilot Pack as standard, featuring cross traffic alert, blind spot detection, rear-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist, a 360-degree camera, auto-dimming mirrors, and LED fog lights. The Plus Pack is now automatically lumped in with the optional Performance Pack, and all models now benefit from wireless phone charging in the cabin.
