Lost Highway, 1997.
This is a dark horror film with random characters, contreved nudity, and violence.
The script hardly makes sense as it seems to be threaded together with visuals. 6/10

Out of curiosity, what was your expectation at the start of the film?

I went into this film blindfolded. No previews, ratings from viewers, or the trailer I posted. It came up in my feed as an unwatched film so I decided to check it out.
Like the original Blade Runner, Lost Highway has a rather strong cult following.
I was actually expecting this film to move along in a linear conventional sense with characters and an obvious plot, boy was I wrong.
Within the first 10 minutes, it pretty much hit me what the director was trying to convey with this strange film.

The line "I like to remember things in my own way, not necessarily the way they happened" pretty much explains it.

Yeah, I think this nails it.

Yeah, I'm a very much a David Lynch fan, Lost Highway attracted a lot of Twin Peaks fans at the time that were looking for something to give them a nostalgia hit for the TV Series that had finished years before (Fire walk with me hadn't been that popular IIRC), but I'm not sure outside of that it was worthy of it's following.

The other two films that followed in Lynch's L.A. Series, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire I think were better received. But if you're not used to the way he goes about making films and telling a story, I appreciate a lot of it probably comes across as meaningless filler!

Tonight’s movie choice is full blown “toxic” masculinity. John Woo’s masterpiece. A Better Tomorrow.
A Better Tomorrow still endures almost 40 years later is not just because of its stylish violence.
But is not being afraid to put the bonds of male friendship from the main characters to the forefront.
If they remade it in the US today they would be Gay and would probably be called “A Fabulous Tomorrow“
Watch it in Cantonese with subtitles not the dubbed version.

Eh?

Uh?

Heroic bloodshed, much as it might contain some toxic masculinity tropes, generally differs in two really important areas; firstly it generally offers a redemption arc to the perpetrators as although they may have destructive traits, they are typically executed with a selfless goal in mind- not a self-centred one, and secondly, it doesn't tend to portray some of the more negative real world outcomes of toxic masculinity such as sexual violence and entitled attitudes to women, or general intolerance towards, or mocking of, anything that isn't male dominated heterosexuality.

Woo has typically not been great with developing female characters to be much more than a Macguffin, but the attitudes of the male hero leads versus the villain leads are notably different.

For what it's worth they remade A Better Tomorrow in China and called it A Better Tomorrow 2018... don't know if it went the gay way or not.

The Meg2 The Trench.
If this was Art and movies with gigantic Sharks are Art🤣it would be a piece of Surrealism from Pablo Picasso. It doesn’t make any sense, full of cliches. But you are hooked.
It does exactly what it says on the Fin.

Haven't watched more than the trailer so far (might it be a mutated species?), but come on, that meg is like twice its normal size 🤣

Guardians 3 wasn't what I was expecting, but not bad, probably better than a few of the last films. The Rocket plot thread was probably more touching than most developed character origins or relationships in the MCU.

Watched Oppenheimer the other night.

Tricky to give it a score, what's there seems to be very well made, but the lack of contextual structure to the story (given it's non linear structure) is pretty jarring, and a missed opportunity to make it relatable. Cillian Murphy did a good job, and though it doesn't seem a taxing role, Matt Damon's portrayal seemed on point, similarly Downy Jr served as an effective heel to an arc that needed a bad guy that wasn't Oppenheimers' conscience.

If it had been written for a 10 parter on Netflix and edited down, it would explain my issues with it.

They also seemed to put a lot of thought into parts of the sound mix, but in other places, very much not, I was expecting much more in this department.

I loved the call-forward to ICBM's that was little more than a couple of frames part way through the film, but I feel it's a shame they didn't have some kind of epilogue to demonstrate how the deterrent played out - generally the film seemed to dodge some of these larger issues and I think that's a shame... I don't care that Nobbing a commie played on his conscience, I do wonder how he related to the cold war arms race.

Tricky to give it a score

Watched it today (had the day off!) Gun to my head, I'd give it a 8.9/10. Technically fantastic. I think Nolan tends to be at his best if his movies are non-linear as his more linear storytelling tends to have moments that are too expository. Great score and cinematography, and for the latter, I do wish I had seen it on IMAX instead of the standard format but none of the theaters near me were playing it this late into the movie's release. Dialogue, which in a Nolan film there are moments where it's heavy-handed or clunky, was efficient and effective. Regarding all the actors' performance, there was no flaws to be found.

While there's a part of me that wanted me to have Nolan & Co. delve into the aftermath: Cold War, arms race, etc., ultimately it was more character study of Oppenheimer than a documentary or dramatic documentary.

I've read folks coming out of early viewings being devastated or being highly emotional. Can't say I experienced that level of emotions (after all, according to some, I am dead inside ;) ) , but I did find myself not saying much or anything for a good 20+ minutes. The last scene and the scene where he gives his Los Alamos speech sat with me for a bit after the movie.

It's no Meg 2 however.🤣
