XC60 2017 Volvo XC60 [renders]

The Volvo XC60 is a compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2008. The XC60 is part of Volvo's 60 Series of automobiles, along with the S60, S60 Cross Country, V60, and V60 Cross Country. The first generation model introduced a new style for the 60 Series models. Along with the rest of the line-up, the first-generation XC60 was refreshed in 2013. Similarly, the second-generation model, released in 2017, is the first in the series. The car was named Car of the Year Japan for 2017–2018.

2018 Volvo XC60 spied for the first time in Amsterdam

The Swedish from Volvo are on a reinvention path nowadays, which was started by the second-generation XC90 SUV and then continued by the S90 sedan and V90 station wagon.

The third model to go under the knife is the best-selling XC60 crossover, which is set to get an all-new replacement in 2017.

Volvo has already started testing pre-production prototypes of the model, with the first one getting caught by one of our spy photographers in the crowded city of Amsterdam, of all places.

Even though the car has Swedish plates, it is quite probable that the engineers onboard aren't just visiting Amsterdam's famous coffee shops as tourists, but are actually testing the next generation of Volvo's City Safety system.

Part of the so-called IntelliSafe array of safety systems, City Safety should transform in a real co-pilot, allowing the 2018 XC60 to drive itself in heavy city traffic and up to a certain speed.

We should probably remind you that Volvo has committed to making all its cars as safe as possible. So safe, in fact, that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020.

Based on the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, just like the XC90 and S90/V90, the new XC60 will have an engine lineup consisting of turbocharged three and four-cylinder engines, at least one of which will be available as a plug-in hybrid.

Our spy photographer mentioned that according to the plate, the prototype in these photos is rocking a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with 254 hp, also known as the T5 gasoline powerplant option on various Volvo models. The most powerful version will probably be a T6 plug-in hybrid version, with around 350 hp in standard form, and approximately 400 hp in Polestar guise.

Expect the new XC60 to be unveiled at the 2017 Paris Motor Show at the latest, unless Volvo goes the distance and shows it in early 2017.

Are they dense? October 16 is Paris. And next Autumn is the IAA in Frankfurt. But Volvo now have a corporate policy of just one Auto show for Europe and the US with Geneva and Detroit being the chosen venues.
The 60 series models will be the real test for Volvo's revival. If they can bring the finesse and detail from the 90 vehicles to the 60 series then they would have a strong contender to penetrate German domination.

What's up with Volvo platforms these days? How many are there? Which are made by Volvo and which are taken from Geely?

I'm pretty sure they have some of this information wrong, the 60 series models are being built on the SPA platform, the CMA models are the 40 series repacements. It looks pretty good, if the render is accurate, a real step up from the current model.

From Autoexpress

"The XC60 will be based on a shortened version of the SPA platform that underpins the XC90 SUV and S90 saloon. The engine line-up will consist of two 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesels initially – a 187bhp D4 and a more punchy 232bhp D5"

There's only 1 at the moment SPA, which is the platform the 90 series models are using. The upcomming 60 series will also use it. The second platform is CMA, compact modular platform, this is developed by Volvo but will also be used by Geely, Geely aren't developing anything for Volvo, the technology is trickling down not up. CMA will be used in the 40 series cars.

This is a good article on Volvo's model plans. http://www.topgear.com/car-news/revealed-volvos-2019-masterplan

All-new Volvo XC60 caught at home in snowy Sweden

Is it going to look like a downsized XC90?
Even though it has been on sale for more than eight years, the XC60 is still going strong in the hugely competitive compact crossover segment in which virtually all of its competitors have been refreshed. Volvo is working on an all-new version based on the company’s SPA platform that debuted on its bigger brother, the XC90. It has also served as foundation for the S90 sedan and V90 wagon duo and now is being put to good use on the second-gen XC60.

The prototype has been spotted conducting cold-weather testing in northern Sweden still carrying a lot of camouflage to conceal a design that by the looks of it will have a lot in common with the aforementioned XC90. The signature vertical taillights will live to see another generation while up front the headlights will host those fancy Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights as seen on Volvo’s SPA-based models.

A minor increase in size is expected to free up more room for passengers as well as increase the trunk’s capacity to make the new XC60 a better companion on longer trips. Even though it will likely end up a tad bigger, the SPA hardware will bring a weight loss that will also pay dividends in terms of efficiency and performance.

As far as the engines are concerned, an assortment of turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline and diesel units will be on offer and are going to be closely related to those inside the XC90. Polestar will likely fiddle with them in order to squeeze more power, but don’t hold your breath for any Volvo engines with more than four cylinders as the Geely-owned marque has made it clear its focus from now on is going to be on downsizing. The top-of-the-range variant is expected to be a T6 Twin Engine model in the same vein as the S60L T6 Twin Engine launched in China last year, but probably an evolution of that setup.

Some say the second-gen XC60 will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017, but that can’t be true because the “Volvo Way to Market” strategy does not include a presence at IAA. Volvo is only attending three big car shows: Geneva, the alternating Shanghai/Beijing, and the North American International Auto Show (Detroit). That’s why we believe the XC60 will either be introduced at a special event next year organized just for it, much like it was the case with the V90 Cross Country, or it will bow in January 2018 at NAIAS.

This will be the true test for Volvo.
Indeed it will, but Volvo has already managed to change public's perception for the brand. Volvo is not a brand for near-retirement academics and plain old boring people any more, it's a youthful brand now!

This both annoys me and pleases me of course. It's nice for people not to look you like an alien when you do drive a Volvo, but then again, driving a Volvo is becoming mainstream.

:D

The 60 cars are when the true test for volume begins. It will be interesting to see if that distinctive Swedisness the modern Volvo's have is carried over to more accessible volume models.

I wouldn't consider the XC60 an accessible volume model. It's a SUV which will, just like the XC90 and other premium SUVs it will remain a successfully model.

Volvo should take a page out of Mercedes' book and make a fun, attractive and practical hatchback. They did out-of-the-box thinking with the Volvo C30 but it was way out of left field on practicality and pricing.

The V40 is actually quite good.

60 series also encompases the S and V models which are cheaper than the 90 series models, I believe the XC60 is Volvos biggest selling model like the Q5 is with Audi.

- Geneva debut
- SPA-Plattform (Scalable Product Architecture)
- 3 and 4 cylinder engines
- 400hp+ plug in hybrid as top model that can drive 50 km on electricity alone
