Official Thread BMW Vision Neue Klasse

If they had the horizontal grills like the SUVs are getting it would be perfection. I don’t get why they want their SUVs looking more like BMWs than their sedans.

The front air-intake looks OTT but I dig the new kidneys and lights suit this 4 series so much better then the current 4 series.

You mean vertical kidneys.

Yeah, but I too wonder why the sedans aren't getting them. The 3er/i3's going to look great without, but these small kidneys would be the icing on the cake.

My personal guess is that the non kidney sedan version was the original idea, and the small kidney on the iX3 was added after the sedan was already set in stone, even though the sedan is launching later. All the earlier concepts (Vision Dee etc.) came without the kidney as the original design idea for the Neue Klasse.

This could be very wrong though.

Lights within the actual kidney is the original idea. Which is super clean, super modern and still super BMW. The above picture can only be one brand. BMW.

Yes-I really like this new grill/shield design as well. I hope that it appears on ALL future BMW sedans, Tourings and other low ride height BMW/ALPINA vehicles. The application of slender vertical kidneys can be saved for the SUVs and elevated ride height SACs.

There's little possibility that the non-SAV/SAC models get vertical kidneys (simply, by looking at the camo - don't be fooled by the tape strips, they are not hiding anything but sensors), at least in a smaller-sized application (like on the E30, for example). What is baffling in the modern days is that BMW seems to be forgetting a specific detail from the past: Dr. Herbert Quandt ordered a last-minute change to the original design of the historical Neue Klasse, which initially did not have the vertical kidneys and, in a sense, it is actually a precursor of the current design idea for the Neue Klasse sedans.

I feel that there might happen an identity crisis when it comes to future NK sedans. In some ways, they will look BMW, but in many other ways, there could be a well-justified sentiment that something is missing from the new front fascias. We'll see how this unfolds in 2026.

I know. Maybe the next wave of NK sedans will have them though. The i3 and facelift 5er/i5 won't have them, no.

It remains to be seen how the NK design philosophy can be evolved into the future. I am not very optimistic on that, given the extent of stylistic simplicity involved & relatively reduced margin for further manouevre.

I am also not very adamant that BMW can differentiate (as they boast) the fascias on the NK models from the 1st waves as to be recognizable from afar. At least, the SAVs/SACs will be recognizable, while the non-SAV/SAC models will look a bit lost since the traditional upright grille is missing. Other than that, I don't see many possibilities.

Agree with this. Also, as others are positioning out, the proportions on the EV should be better (front wheel moved forward).

Just for the sake of it? Makes zero sense as it's form follows function here. There's the G50 for the people who want a prestige gap, which is actually fully functional on the G50 and not needed on the BEV.

BMW sedans and coupes have had the horizontal grille since the E36 and have always been perfectly recognizable.
You’re comparing apples and pears. On those models, the typical BMW comprised the 2 separate, clearly individualized kidneys. This new NK design once again incorporates the headlights into the 2 units (although they are not considered grills in the actual BMW sense), yet on the historic models, this styling was always joined by the vertically disposed kidneys - kidneys, in general. Prior to the series model, the prototype 1500 of the 60s had no vertical kidneys. To be honest, it simply did not look like a true BMW. Glad they changed it eventually, 2 months before the official premiere at IAA Frankfurt in September 1961, at the special request of Dr. Herbert Quandt.
