BMW doesn't even offer a V8 in Europe, that's how much an I6 is needed. 100% sure the vast vast majority of S class sold in the EU are I6. MB doesn't seem to publicly break down sales numbers on engine types.

That's true. However, not because they wouldn't be desirable or suit the car better, but because of Brussels bureaucracy regarding CO2 downsizing, shared CO2 quotas in manufacturers' portfolios, etc.
As i said I6/V6 in an S-Class are for housemaids. A true Sonderklasse/7er starts with a propper V8.
What will happen if they stop producing them? Simple: we will keep driving older models.

Well yeah, from an environmental standpoint, a 6 cylinder is generally better. Less CO2 and less consumption. These are simple basic facts.

Desirability has little to do with it, of course a V8 is more desirable in such a car. And a V12 would make it even better.
