One should never judge a car's success by your favorite car brand seen in your area compared to other brands when there are thousands of other location that can differ.
I definitely see more E-Classes here in my area. In the next county that could change altogether.

For a € 100.000 car 290 km range is inadequate, to put it mildly. It only shows that BEV in general and this i5 M60 in particular, in this aspect are inferior products compared to their ICE counterparts. The average customer knows and refuses to buy.
Completely agree. He drives 60.000 km a year, thus constantly looking where he can charge.
Uunfortunately, there are relatively frequent problems with the charging stations:
  • occupied,
  • missing (but marked as available in the app - no joke),
  • defective (but functional according to the app)
  • reduced charging capacity
  • blocked by ICE cars
I can confirm that driving a hybrid car.
With low mileage charging is not a major issue, but with 60.000 km it becomes one.

Inferior in terms of range. If someone doesn't *need* more than 290km then your sweeping statement doesn't hold true at all. You're focusing on one single criteria (range) to say the whole car is inferior to an ICE equivalent.

It's not. that one doesn't see any W214 at all, but, indeed, I confirm your observation that one sees a lot more new BMW 5 series than new Mercedes-Benz E-class on Dutch roads.
Starting to see more W214s here in London now. But hardly any of the 5er too though - most of the ones I've seen were i5 M60s tho, so I guess the lower end/petrol ones aren't doing so well. Seeing loads of 1ers and newer A-classes though lol.

Why is Mercedes so strong in London, yet BMW is stronger nation wide? S class to 7 series is literally like 3 or 4 to 1. I also saw more new E classes last October than 5s.

Commercial use vastly favours Mercedes. I'd wager a big chunk of the E, S and S-based Maybach models you see in Central are corporate transport, executive private hire or hospitality.

Keep in mind that using a private car in Central London could cost as much as buying an E-Class in parking fees on a monthly basis... An effect of this is that cars in use all day get seen more, even if there weren't actually more of them in the first place - which may explain why the regional difference seems so skewed.

Addison Lee, who I think are one of the largest private hire companies in London, claimed 10,000,000 annual customers in London, and London's largest fleet of Mercedes cars, their fleet being in excess of 4,500 cars in London alone. They're also far from being the only player in the market, but even then, I've never had a ride in an executive taxi that wasn't a Mercedes. The last Maybach I saw in London was private hire (£170/hour), operated by London Luxury, whose offer E, S, V and Maybach from Mercedes, but only i7 from BMW.

I mean, most of the 7-ers you see on London are probably on similar duty, they're just not as popular for the purpose.

Second hand sales are also hugely popular in the suburbs.
I see untold numbers of W213s around London. They're insanely popular.

I guess BMWs are better out in the country where people feel a more "drivers car" can actually get some half decent use on the B roads.

Here in Madrid the ratio of 5er vs E Classes also favours the BMW. By quite a distance. Most of the W214s you see around are black cars for Uber drivers.

I have no doubt these anecdotal observations are influenced by BMW’s smart decision to have EV, hybrid, and ICE powertrain options available in one vehicle.

Aesthetically, I’m grateful Mercedes separated the platforms and left the E-class looking a good deal more elegant. Shame about the swing and miss with the electric cars though.

Probably.
I'm seeing more and more EQEs which are probably on favourable company car programmes along with the i5.

As I've said. Hardly seen a 520i, mostly i5 40 or more commonly i5 M60s.

But again. London is a bit unique in that I'm starting to see W214s in it's hybrid form.

I reckon in the medium term the W214 hybrid and G60 hybrid will be the dominant sellers due to the reduced demand in EV.

The new M5 seems to be doing good despite the complaints about the weight.

BMW Is Shocked by M5 Touring DemandThe automaker expected to make more sedans, but production is evenly split between the two variants.

The BMW M5 Touring is finally on sale in the United States for the first time, and the M5 wagon is off to a good start. According to Sylvia Neubauer, BMW’s Vice President of Customer, Brand, and Sales, production of the M5 sedan and wagon is currently split 50:50, outperforming BMW’s initial expectations.

Neubauer told BMW Blog that the company had planned two-thirds of production to be the sedan and one-third the wagon, but that’s not the case. And it’s not as if sedan buyers are flocking to the long-roofed version. Demand for the sedan is higher than expected, too, so BMW has increased production for both models.

Went to bmw today to look at the x7. Dislike the minimal side bolstering and slippery leather. Will make journeys on rest b roads too tiring.

I sat in lots of other cars and was surprised how different the width and level of support there is.

I don’t like the design of the 5 series but sat in it anyway. Boom it clicked. Seats are perfect. Not too wide and not too tight. Comfy but don’t feel like my body would roll out of the seat in roundabouts. Steering wheel north and seating position was brilliant too. Everything clicked.

Although I like physical buttons, the rose ambient lighting, ivory leather and minimal buttons made it feel calming.

Who would've thought that the car with the best power to weight ratio would win the test? What a surprise... No, really, it is surprising, because turns out that the E200 isn't bottom of the E-Class range. Anyway, English subtitles available.
