ID.3 [Official] Volkswagen ID.3

It's build on the same platform, so yes it is pretty similar to the ID3. But it is considerably larger than the ID3.

So like a Passat vs Superb?

Looks wicked in dark colours. Love the rear 3/4 view

Very nice indeed.

I suppose this ID3 is a car that won't last much more than a generation though. The Golf 8 will likely be the last ICE version, and the next Golf and IDe3 will merge into the next BEV Golf 9.

Good point @klier as the Golf is the core of VW, and the car has also an electric version, and while I'd say that the ICE versions of the Golf won't disappear all the way, VW need customers to be more aware of their serious intention to enter the BEV for now using this ID3 as a first step in that direction until they cement their reputation in that regard before integrating the line with the Golf (and possibly the rest of their lineup).

First of all I’ve got to admit that I’m no expert on this and that I just take my knowledge from some articles.

But to my understanding it’s more like Golf and Karoq, which are both based on the MQB.
The MEB is supposed to be even more scalable than the MQB. So VW can offer a great vatiety of different sizes of battery packs, AWD and RWD, as well as different bodyworks all on the same platform.

I think the Golf 8 will either live longer than 7 years or be required succeeded by an ICE Golf 9 that will have strong appeal in developing nations where charging infrastructure will still be lacking around 2025.

Yes it is, this is the Skoda version. Hopefully the look transitions to the production version due next year.

Personally I thought ID.1 was ridiculous because who knew that you could upload Earth Computers directly into Alien Technology?
Don't get me started on ID.2.

Ah So Skoda are doing an ID.3 just as Seat have done an ID.3?

The developing nations in which in 7 years the charging infrastructure will still be lacking do not have big market for new cars. I'm sure that a new Golf currently has a total market of 0,0000001%. But in these countries in 7 years the Golf 7 will be the king.
The markets that in 7 years will have a good developped charging infrastrucure make maybe 95-97% of the market for new cars above 30 000 Euro or USD.

Yupp. In develop world's they don't scrap cars unless they have been in a serious accident. Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s remain popular as they are easy to repair and can run for 500,000 miles if well maintained.

Don't underestimate potential of the new tech with a decentralized structure to skip ahead - many developing countries that had very sketchy landline coverage went straight to cell phones because it was much easier for companies to put up cell towers than expect a governments to pull landlines to every home. Solar + battery packs have the same potential to develop a decentralized power infrastructure, especially near the equator (where developing countries are predominantly located).

They are really pushing this New Volkswagen angle.:D

Delighted to hear this car is coming to South Africa! 58kWh would be perfect for most needs. Tempting!

20,000 deposits in the UK, first allocation of 1500 units sold out in 48 hours last May. Deliveries to start at the end of next month. I reckon this will easily be the best selling EV in the UK within the next 12 months IF they can stay on top of supply issues.

That’s optimistic despite the rows of undelivered iD3 in Germany due to software issues.[/QUOT...

Such issues aside, it's probably one of the better looking EV's out there, it's keenly priced and the range is pretty reasonable, and it's a VW*. The Model 3 managed to outsell the Leaf last year, probably in part due to pre-order fulfillment, but the iD3 is a lot cheaper than the Model 3, and a bit cheaper than the Leaf... Sales figures aren't all out yet, but we're only talking about 5-6000 units to take the crown... doesn't seem like a big ask to me.

*That's a good thing for many people.

*It happened to me, when you're undecided between two or three brands to buy, VW decides for you, it has a plus for being German and a long etcetera, (if there's nothing else really worthwhile).

No doubt it will be a success, VW has as a magnet that takes away many things from the buyer's head related to the purchase and they do it without thinking twice
