The high res pics makes the rear not better. It looks to bulky for me. But for the last judgement I have to wait till I see the car in real life.

Overall it's a very strong handsome masculine design. My only really slight complaint is the interior looks a smidge like something from Cadillac's design team. Restrained and sensible.

What "packages" does Volvo offer (for exterior trim)?
I mean, just as Mercedes has AMG-pack, BMW M-pack etc, what does Volvo have?

Volvo S90
Volvo Cars debuted the highly-anticipated Volvo S90 luxury sedan in Gothenburg, Sweden on the heels of the company's award-winning Volvo XC90 SUV. The all-new Volvo S90 sedan is a bold entry into the luxury sedan market and sets a new standard with superior materials, technology, comfort and class-leading semi-autonomous features.

"With $11 USD billion of investment over the past five years we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be - we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand," said Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group.

The Volvo S90 will combine Scandinavian design with cutting-edge safety and cloud-based applications and services. The interior makes use of the Sensus Connect touchscreen that debuted in the XC90, providing a clutter-free interior with minimal dashboard buttons.

"Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior. On the inside we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control," said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group.

The Volvo S90 introduces another step toward Volvo's Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020, through world first safety technologies and highly advanced semi-autonomous features.

Three engine choices will be available: the award-winning four-cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged and supercharged T6 engine, the turbocharged T5 variant and the clean and powerful T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid.

"The S90 has taken a big step forward in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort," said Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

The S90 will follow a legacy of strong sedan sales for Volvo Cars in the United States. Over the last several years, Volvo sedans have enjoyed significant demand at launch, with the last luxury sedan outselling robust competitors in its segment. Volvo Cars has seen an 18% growth in US car sales so far in 2015. The all-new 2016 XC90 has received strong demand from American drivers along with the XC60, which has enjoyed 31% growth in US sales.

"The S90 is a terrific addition to the Volvo Cars lineup in the United States," said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, "it will continue the terrific sales momentum Volvo Cars has gained within the last year."

New Volvo S90 can detect moose

Following countless scale model pictures and leaks, the highly-anticipated Volvo S90 has finally been officially introduced at a special event in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Earlier today we received an early look at the model and now it’s here in its full glory. What you see from the attached photos is a stylish and attractive sedan with a low roofline and sleek profile that appears to be slightly longer and larger than its predecessor, the S80. Up front we see the Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights that the company introduced with the XC90, while at the back there’s a pair of C-shaped LED taillights.

Step inside the cabin and you’ll find a XC90-inspired interior with minimal amount of buttons, featuring the Sensus Connect touchscreen for the infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. The manufacturer says the interior combines “Scandinavian design” with “cutting-edge safety and cloud-based applications and services”.

At launch, power will be provided by a range of three petrol engines that includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged T6 engine, a turbocharged T5 variant, and the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid modification. Detailed power and fuel consumption figures are expected soon.

As a part of Volvo’s Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by the year 2020, the S90 comes equipped with an advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, called the Pilot Assist. The system gives “gentle steering inputs” to keep the car properly aligned within lanes up to speeds of around 130 km/h (81 mph). The premium sedan also offers a brake support function that can detect large animals such as elk, horses or moose, night or day.

“Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior,” Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president design at Volvo Car Group, commented. On the inside we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control.”

Dr Peter Mertens, senior vice president R&D at Volvo, added that “the S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride” and that the company has “completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort.”

The public premiere of the car will take place during the 2016 Detroit Motor Show in January 2016.

My only really slight complaint is the interior looks a smidge like something from Cadillac's design team.

Now when you've said it, I see it. I'm curious about whether the parallel section above the wood on the dash is leather or plastic.

I like it. The interior is wonderful if a SUVish looking because they lifted it right out of the XC90, but this is winner for Volvo. Now get a coupe and convertbile out please. I wonder what model is next to get this new design language, anyone know? This is a very distinctive design language and it will become associated with Volvo. I just wish they would develop a new I6. Jaguar and Benz are going that route.

I LOVE HOW THIS LOOKS!!!!! It's design, like the XC90, is modern and foward-looking without extraneous design details. The interior just looks soothing. If I was about to buy an A6 2.0T quattro, I think I would seriously reconsider and look at this.

The high res pics makes the rear not better. It looks to bulky for me. But for the last judgement I have to wait till I see the car in real life.

I was also hoping the bulky rear lights seen on those model cars was just lacking details that are difficulty to reproduce on model cars. Alas, I was wrong. However, seeing pictures of the actual car with those rear lights, I don't mind them and actually like it. It gives a bit of funkiness without going over the top.

Overall it's a very strong handsome masculine design. My only really slight complaint is the interior looks a smidge like something from Cadillac's design team. Restrained and sensible.

The thinner, vertical HVAC vents contribute to that Caddy vibe.

I am more interested in seeing how this design translates to their "lesser" offerings, i.e. S/V60, etc.

Just on looks alone, I say "Bravo Volvo!"

BTW, where's the V90?

Not bad Volvo, not bad. XC90 and now this. I've never really cared for Volvo till these two showed up.
Can we attribute this to the Chinese?

Pardon the haphazard Google translation:

Collin: Looks very good and tidy

Finally, here is the new Volvo S90.

Right now unveiled the car - and the goal is to challenge Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

- It looks very good and nicely laid out, says Aftonbladet automotive expert Robert Collin

It is the model that will give the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series a match for customers.

A car according to Volvo itself is their ticket to the exclusive club of premiumsedaner and proof that they have real luxury ambitions.

- The launch of the Volvo XC90 was a clear statement of intent. We are now clearly in the game. The $ 11 billion invested over the last five years has transformed the image of Volvo Cars and we are now living up to the promise of giving our brand a new relevant image, says Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of the Volvo Car Group

Just the right proportions
At the showdown, as was design director almost moved to tears when he told me about his latest creation, saying that with this car that Volvo could really say "goodbye" to "near-premium segment."

- We have made a premium sedan with the completely correct proportions. We have moved up the front wheels and the interior backwards. The grill has 23 metal ribs that gives a proud and distinctive look of Volvo. Thor's Hammer-lamps are a high-tech light source that give the car character, says Thomas Ingenlath.

However, new S90 measure? Aftonbladet Robert Collin is in place in Gothenburg:

What is the first impression of the new Volvo S90?

- For ten years, Volvo has built cars that had curves here and there, and narrow side windows - but it has not been really good. Now they have built a car that truly Nordic desing. Taut and straight with large windows and fine lines. New design director Ingenlath has cleaned away the frills and others - and brought to a cleaner, more fluid design.

Will be no Swedish favorite
It looks bigger in the pictures is that correct?

- It has grown incredibly. Previously, it has been crowded in the back seat of Volvo's largest, but not anymore. Now it plenty of space. It has been a very long and, according to Volvo elegant bonnet. But there is a bit of a design gimmick - for during that there is not any big engine.

Large and luxurious - but who will buy it?

- Volvo makes no secret of the car will be slightly bigger and price class more expensive than before. S90 is no car they built for Sweden, but a global car and then glancing primarily at the United States and China. S80 have not been easy to sell, but this car, there is an emerging need for. And I think that is true, but a Swedish favorite, it will not - there will be wagon V90.

Honestly, do you believe the S90 will compete with Audi, BMW and Mercedes?

- I think it will be very difficult to get buyers from these. Audi and BMW owners tend to like their brands, especially here in Europe. But in the US, I think definitely it has a chance, and in China, I think this car is very right.
