2014 BMW M5 Competition vs 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S

For a minute, I thought I had taken a trip back to the old GermanCarForum.com days. We have not had a debate like this in years it seems. Same members, same topic, same issues, same cars. lOl!
Because of that, I will never believe what Just_me says about BMW. He is a trooper and always will be.

BOT, I wonder what the next generation 5er holds... this platform sharing, cost-cutting really did not do it justice.
took away it`s true roots. The next one should go back to it`s true roots I hope.

I think some of you people need to come take a ride with me in my lowly diesel auto. Other than the move to over-sanitised (but still precise) steering, a Beemer still drives like a Beemer used to. I've also driven the new 1er quite a bit and the piddly little 118i drives waahaaay better than its E82 predecessor. 125i is a peach. M135i is as much BMW as the old 130i was and garners rave reviews for being super involving compared to it hot hatch competition. BMW will soon offer a limited slip diff as an option on M Performance models.

The F80 and F82 are going to be completely fantastic. Their high-flow turbocharged inline 6 engine will emerge as a revelation in the discipline of forced induction, mark my words... Yes, it's a bloody shame that the NA I6 is gone but that's the way of the world these days. Also, kiss manual transmissions good bye - Porsche has; the kids buying them today won't even get to experience how they can and should be driven.

The F10's biggest blight in its copybook is that it is too heavy by 200 kg. That being said, the last time I saw an M car going sideways on a public road was a brilliantly oversteered CSL by some fat, greasy continental outside a BMW dealer. Props to him. The M5 does have the better drivetrain than the E63 - no question its M-DCT transmission is superior to the old-tech 7G-Tronic auto dressed up as an MCT by Mercedes' marketing department (yes, they too aren't guilty) and its new electrically managed LSD is proper sporting car stuff.

Where the BMW loses out to the E63 is in the engine character stakes. Their fancy hot-side inside, cross-flowed, twin-scroll twin turbo innovation hasn't yielded benefits in the emotional criteria to the order of what the masterpiece M157 does. And this is where the AMG does score big points over the M Car. Turbocharging is a great leveller it seems. For the rest of it, go check out the delicious new 2 Series and honestly tell me that BMW fans haven't had it this good.

I'm 37 years old and people do change. I've grown up and I got new perspective of cars. Only BMW's I still like is the 3/4-series and little love for the 5-series. Me being 'trooper' is wrong, you bet on it. If I was such die hard bmw fan like in the past, I wouldnt be getting a Fiesta ST in 5 weeks and I would still support every decision made by BMW. But I don't.
You on the other hand is still the same I think? You used to support speed and comfort but now you talk about driving joy and other factors seem less important.

We are out of the subject, too much talk about me and my beliefs. Its like I'm the bad guy and you the good flawless guys. Not sure I like, so I say we go back to the real topic. M5 vs E63.

Last time they had it this good was when the M3 CSL came out.

^ 37 years old..? DAMN you OLD

Thats all i took away from that conversation.

:D
I know. Im getting old, grey hair, teeth falling off, tired and weak everyday. Thats what happen when you get mature and get different view on life ;) trust me, its going to happen to you too...
Time flies...been around here like 15 years....

As much as I like both of these cars, I can't help to think that the M5 is looking like a normal 5 series with M pack.
Great cars both of them. Too bad that they didnt have the RS7 there also. It would be a great match.

Both are very evenly matched, eventually the M5 pulls ahead but as ever you aren't really getting an accurate comparison because we don't know the conditions each car faced or how accurate their respective speedos.

Pay no attention to the trolls.

Or ban them from BMW threads....like how it was done with Levi. I know it can be done, think about it.
This is not a BMW thread..

There is no sound of crickets in this thread:D

Both cars are great.
They have very close 60-121/122 mph time.
I am also amazed that despite being RWD, M5 achieved same results in MT Figure 8 & Cornering G-Force. Nice Job!

It was interesting that they called Germans Liars!!
M5 & E63 both produced the amount of torque claimed by the factories and only E63 had some 60 HP more than claimed.
Maybe AMG is lying but the biggest Liar of all is the Nissan GTR!!
