Aren't you forgetting the S class?

^Not really. Ive been in the W223 S-Class plenty of times.
These are my photos when I went to the last auto show. (Hardly anyone here likes to take photos of their encounters. I don`t understand that.)
From my experiences, the E-Class feels better than the S, especially the lower door storage compartments. The E feels like its made from a better grade material. If you don`t believe me please go to your local MB dealer and check them out. I know you are not an MB fan.
When I test-drove the E, I told you a changed the ambient lighting to blue for your preference since you complained about the pink. I believe you can drop me a return with my request on a quick sum-up of the E vs the S interior quality. The E is up there with the 5-Series. It is not playing games.
You can see the back of the E-Class there. This is when I compared the interiors first hand.

Will do that next time I am over there, hopefully within a month. It's right next to BMW
At the very least, I think the S looks a lot better in pics.

Not doubting that. But truth to be told, the 5er has seen better days too....

The E is not finished to a higher standard from better materials IMO.

What I think you are referring to is the underlying solidity of the door cards, transmission tunnel, trim elements etc. It gives the interior an even greater sense of quality and durability beyond just the visible surface finishes. The W214 definitely feels more solid than the W223 in certain areas, but that's about it.

^
Correct. I believe the S-Class, upon its facelift, will get the material upgrades of the E-Class without losing its luster or distinctive details an S deserves.

Hopefully every Mercedes from here on gets a renewed focus on interior quality. The test will be this new CLA. It has improved with the latest generation, but it needs to improve a lot further.

The W214 brings back a level of interior solidity akin to the W212 and is supposed to be their 'turn around' car.

If all those surveys are for the first 90 days they’re meaningless. The JDP Dependability study, the one that looks at cars 3 years old in the hands of their original owner, is the survey they counts.

I get the same impression with the new E-Class as well. While the interior has improved greatly from the previous version, it feels plasticky.
I also don't like how everything is built around a large display. The minimalistic design details have spread like an infection across the luxury car maket with less manual controls which the consumer most likely never asked for. Everything is designed on a budget it seems. Yet these car makers are charging hundreds of thousands of dollars from the consumer. It is a dark period in the automotive industry IMO right now.

Both the 90-day and three-year ownership categories have there places in the JD power study.
Mercedes is still scoring average in the three-year ownership surveys. MB needs to do better.

Also these companies like JDP and Consumer Reports seem to just group all engines and trims together as 1 model. A 640i with N55 and a 650i with a N63 are going to be totally different experiences in terms of reliability, but these useless orgs only give 1 rating for all the engines.

Like how can you rate a 2019 BMW 5 Series reliability blanketly, it makes 0 sense. A 530i and M550i are totally different. It's not helpful consumer information, I wouldn't look at these sources for any advice.

Saw the eclass yesterday and kicked its tyres.

Good
-With the classic grille and hood ornament, it's the most elegant and respect commanding Eclass since the W124. This is part of the Exclusive Premium Plus trim.
-The aforementioned trim is an option for every engine! This is amazing. Mercedes could have been dicks by not offering the trim in the UK or making it exclusive to the 450. It's utterly fab that you can spec an E200 to resemble a V8 Sclass.
- Quality is good step up on a c and eqe in Sat in a few months ago. Both were squeaky in many place but the Eclass isn't. It matches and exceeds the w213 in several areas.
-There is no poverty interior spec. Cabin looks premium both with and without the hyper screen.
-If you spec ivory, almost the entire cabin is Ivory including carpets and headliners.

Bad
-Rear seat experience isn't just.....adequate. Packing is poor and in the rear is feels noticeably smaller and less roomy than in the GLE and GLB which are both shorter cars. It feels a bit poor value for money.
-Did Ryanair or Hertz design the back seat? It's rather low maintenance. There are no amenities in the rear. No 3rd zone climate control or storage under neat the vents. The centre arm rear doesn't have cup holders or storage. Instead, there are slots for smartphone. I am doubtful whether some phones with chunky cases even fit.
-Panoramic glass panels don't have hard retractable covers instead its a retractable voile or mesh like material. I would be concerned about noise intrusion during rain fall or hail.
-Car prices have gone up but it's hard not to whinge. Choose a 6 cylinder option and you are neck and neck with a 3 year old w223 with 6-10k miles. Not a like for like comparison but it just feels like the E is missing a few surprises or nice to have. Eitherway it's a positive that airmatic, rear wheel steering and the classic grille are avaible to the E200. Sclass looks without S class running costs.

But geez, the car is a looker!

A few points:

-The GLE has a longer wheelbase. You may not know this, but the GLE is actually a long wheelbase model which is why it has the V167 chassis designation. They killed the regular wheelbase model in development so it's a bit unusual in that case. Also, most SUVs are shorter than their sedan counterparts.
-The amenities in the rear seat are totally dependent on your trim level obviously. Rear climate control is available. The rear arm rest does have cupholders, you just didn't know how to use the compartment. If you press hard a second time it extends out further revealing the cupholders. I think it's a stupid design but that's besides the point. :) You also didn't mention the storage pockets in the rear doors, which is larger than in most cars in this class.
-They've had the mesh for the pano roof shade for generations now. Never heard a complaint about that.

Thanks. Those were mainly nitpicks. I still want the car though.
