Each year, MotorTrend selects a range of new and significantly updated vehicles to compete for the coveted “Golden Calipers.” An expert team of editors and guest judges thoroughly evaluate each contender on six key criteria: safety, value for money, advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency and performance of intended function, to determine which car receives MotorTrend’s highest honor.

"The meticulous and thoughtful changes that went into the 2024 E-Class are remarkable and incredibly impactful, which impressed the MotorTrend team. The E-Class met these requirements in all six evaluation criteria and was the undeniable winner when compared to other vehicles in this segment."
Ed Loh, Editor-in-Chief, MotorTrend Group

When choosing the 2025 Car of the Year, MotorTrend found that the E-Class offers significantly more than ever before. The new generation model features remarkable advances in design, new technologies with user-friendly features, improved driver assistance systems, and increased driving comfort, performance and efficiency.

Today I’ve driven an E53. It belongs to a client and I’ve driven just a short distance of circa 60 km. Fortunately it was a drive in the city, country roads and NL highway.
Brief but comprehensive: it’s a very powerful limousine, great in a straight line, cornering less impressive (weight). It’s weakest point? Absence of driving comfort, harsh and bumpy, very unlike the normal W214 E class. If I could chose between a E200 and the E53, but had to drive more than 100 km, I’d take the E200.

I had the very same feeling with W213 E63 AMG. A bit too harsh for daily use on our roads in CZ/Prague. Sound in comfort mode a bit quiet, in Sport/Sport+ artificial then. Fuel consumption was absurd, even in comparison with other V8s (BMW/Audi). Therefore the outcome was the same. I gladly got back to my former W213 E220d 4M. Now I drive facelifted W213 E400d, which I consider the best daily option out of the range (I drive cca 65k kms per year).

I was also very curious about the new W214 E53 AMG. Sufficient performance, probably more reasonable fuel economy for daily driving, option of quiet electric drive in the city. From short drive, I have similar feeling. A bit too harsh, no emotions, sound not natural. Again, E450 or E450d will make more sense.

On the other hand, I liked the current RS6 C8 a lot. A perfect daily.

For that kind of mileage you are doing, nothing beats a 6 cylinder diesel. A very good choice by the way, your E400d.

I think the E450d is the pick of the range, it has the best combination of performance, economy, driving comfort and handling.

It uses only 5.1l/100km in the ECO run and only 7.3l/100km overall. That is hardly more fuel used than the new Audi A5 TDi 2.0 inline 4, which uses 4.9l/100km in ECO and 6.7l/100km overall.

Yes, even the old E400d offers good package. With E450d they took it even further. Good that MB is still developing six cylinder diesel engines. By developing I mean increasing power and improving on it. As opposed to BMW, who basically ditched the 40d engine and kept only 30d + mild hybrid with 40d designation in 5 and 7 series.

I would also consider W214 E300de for daily driving. Quiet electric driving in the city is attractive, as is the possibility of energy recuperation, even though it comes with increased weight and complexity. In a car as nice as W214, I dont want to listen to 4-cylinder diesel when accelerating from traffic lights. Also electric range and charging speed is sufficient. What worries me a bit is that while the old W213 E300de offered very good performance (100-200 in around 15-16s), the new W214 seems to be significantly slower (around 19s), based on videos and also fastestlaps data. Also top speed was reduced from around 250 to like 225 km/h.
