S90/V90 [Official] Volvo S90 Official first pics

The Volvo S90 is an executive sedan manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 2016 to 2025. Its estate variant is the Volvo V90.
Out of curiosity, is the reason Volvo is able to achieve a shorter front overhang vs. Audi due to Volvo not using an engine with more than four cylinders in a trnasverse layout? Not to divert the focus from thread too much, but since Audi utilizes engines that range from four to twelve cylinders in a longitudinal layout for their three sedan lines, does accounting for that kind of powertrain flexibility lead to such signifcant front overhang? Or is it the layout in and of itself the significant contributor to the large overhang?

I guess to shorten my queries a bit...can Audi realistically achieve Volvo's front overhang while keeping the layout and cylinder count?

@Mark or @Monster or any other mods, please feel free to move this to a more appropriate location.

You pretty much answered your own question hoffmeister. It's mostly down to transverse v longitudinal and how Audi has to have it engines reasonably far forward to accommodate FWD and their quattro system.

Ok, gotcha. So a longitudinal layout in FWD-based platform is the bigger contributor to the bigger front overhang than the number of cylinders or the engine capacity.

In Audi's Torsen Quattro application, the front differential needs to be on the front axle, so the engine has to be in front of it. Luckily, Audi doesn't offer an inline six engine, so a 4-pot is going to dictate the necessary front overhang. Then you can easily stick a V6 or V8 in the front with no issues.

Then comes the Porsche & MB approach that has the engine sit on top of the front axle, the gearbox and centre differential behind it, and then the front propsafts running through the engine oil pan.

This reduces the front overhang, but increases the centre of gravity.

Notice the position of the gearbox behind the engine. The gearbox sends power to the front with an offset axle that goes to the front diff (beige thingy next to the crankshaft) which then spans two propshafts, one of which runs through the oil pan.

It's Volvo's new system called PowerPulse.

It's an electric pump that compresses clean intake air into that storage tank. This compressed air is then fed via a valve to the exhaust manifold in order to increase the exhaust gasses pressure, so that you get a reduced turbo lag when you want rapid acceleration.

Here's a video with a better explanation:

I sent this post of mine to a friend and he made a very good remark:

Imagine what will happen if with sufficient exhaust temperature you fully depress the accelerator and this PowerPulse system kicks in. It's going to send fresh intake air to mix with the exhaust gasses. The said exhaust gasses should be around 800C if I am not mistaken and contain unburnt gasoline. This will work the exact same way an afterburner works in fighter jets.

Volvo S90 Coupe Hinted By Company Exec For 2020

Volvo may have just pulled the wraps of the new S90, but the company has big plans for its flagship sedan, which should be produced in more body styles.
as an estate, the V90, from the leaked scale models of the past few weeks, but what we didn’t know is that the Swedish-based brand wants to take things even further away.

Talking to AutoExpress at the S90 reveal event in Gothenburg, Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's senior vice president of design, hinted towards a possible coupe version. This will be based on the same SPA architecture and it should borrow its lines from the Concept Coupe, revealed a couple of years ago.

The report suggests that the future S90 Coupe will start from around £40,000 (~$60,000) and it would rival theMercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and BMW 6-Series Coupe. The model S90 four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, along with the T8 plug-in hybrid, are there for the taking and an all-electric version is not excluded either.

The next "logical step" with the flagship model should be the addition of a drop-top version, which will take onthe convertible variants of the aforementioned competitors.

The Volvo official continued to talk about the future vehicle lineup, which will be rolled off by the end of the decade, mentioning the "90 cluster", the "60 cluster" and the XC40 as well.

"First we'll roll out the 90 cluster, then we'll roll out the 60 cluster. Then even that new product - and as everyone knows by now, an XC40 as well. All this we want to manage within a four-year period."

The company's fans should not wait for anything bigger than the current S90, because the automaker has no plans to offer a rival for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and others "players" in the large executive saloon segment.

I am mighty impressed by the overall looks of this car, it's very sleek. I especially like the 3/4 front view and profile. The front overhang looks nice and short for a FWD car, Audi take note. Rear lights are the worst feature they sought of remind me of some American cars from the 70!s and 80's. The interior is magnificent and certainly a breath of fresh air in this segment, lovely wood and use of aluminum metal beading on the wood. The jewel like gearshift and also the touch screen as well as the slim and superbly comfortable looking seats will make this car a pleasure to spend time in on long journeys.

I simply cannot add anymore and agree 100%. great job VOLVO!

If the V90 and XC90 look like the renders then they will be some of the best looking vehicles in there class. I'm really looking forward to test driving a V90.

^ beautiful car, but why that ugly hood shutline? Volvo got that right with the XC90, but can't with the S90/V90.

Yu took the words right of my mouth..(and the new E class is going to have the El Cheapo shutline too sadly :( )

But then again, they did nearly everything right with the XC90, and it's a flawless slam dunk design wise. The S90 sedan however....errrr...I SERIOUSLY can't understand why some here like it. It looks pretty damned horrible imo. The front dead on is the only nice part, the rest sucks.

Volvo, make a real RWD sedan or just quit. S90 is ugly. Not remotely near any of the Germans, not even Audi.

That ugly pigsnout design shutline is only seen on the sportsgrille, not on the exclusive grille; at least Mercedes-Benz offers a choice for W213 buyers.

I doubt its going to be major problem for Volvo. Nobody is going to refuse a S90 because of how the shutline is designed ;)

The sport grille should have had neat shutlines too though. And that grille is what we will non stop see.

It's only a major problem when we discuss the design of the car Zafiro ;)

I'm glad the shutline is only seen in the area (NL:breedte) of the sportsgrille itself and not across the whole hood, as seen on the S/V90 (and former F01 and current F10: they "cured" it with the G11).

I'm not so sure about that. When it comes to design, the devil is in the details. For me it's a reason not to buy a S/V90.

One of the few times I can actually agree.
Although I would not go to the extreme in calling it ugly, does not stand out enough to compete with the Germans. The exterior design does not have the hi-end luxurious elegance and class to it. It just scream utility imo, like it`s built to last for another 20-years. (Typical Swedish Volvo toughness)

Volvo has gotten luxurious for the 21st century. It seems the original formula has not changed at all.
