GLS [Renders] 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS (GL successor)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

When was that? Most wheel designs have been shared with at least one other model since I was born. I haven’t see a change: one group of wheels that can be seen on a multitude of models, another across different body styles of the same model.

As far as I remember, in the W220 and W221 guided generations, wheel designs were not shared (that excessively) between volume segments. The W220, for instance, had these polished standard rims, and I guess, similar ones were available for the SLK but not (officially) for C- or E-class. Some of the other designs had no derivatives, at all.

Maybach SUV rumors refuse to die? :)

"With the new 167 series a Maybach luxury SUV model could finally arrive, whose (small scale) production Mercedes-Benz never denied. That there is a small market for luxury SUVs worldwide other manufacturers have already recognized here."

But similar ones were available on the CLK. And not all the wheels on models today can be found on other MB vehicles.

Maybach 9 is the ultra-luxury GLS concept to premiere in April

The Stuttgart-based grand brand is intensely working on a new generation of its monstrous GLS, set to keep its head up in the segment of the super luxurious premium SUVs. Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and probably Aston Martin’s Lagonda SUV will be waiting for it.

It has already been four years since talks about a Maybach GLS surfaced. Autocar Magazine now reveals that the dream will finally materialize. Mercedes is planning on revealing the concept of the SUV in April, at the Beijing Motor Show. Under the name of Maybach 9, the GLS-based concept will get all the specific exclusive Maybach treatment, inspired from the latest Mercedes-Maybach S-Class just unveiled in Geneva. A radiator grille with vertical slats, a two-tone paint scheme and the double-M logo on the pillars will be a few of the exterior elements adorning the Maybach 9.

The Maybach GLS will make its way off the assembly line in November 2018, right on time for the Los Angeels Motor Show, with sales ready to start some time in 2019. The production will probably start off at the Mercedes Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, where the current GLS is being built.

The company’s 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine should find room under the bonnet of the high-ride car.

China, Russia and the United States are keen on receiving the Mercedes-Maybach SUV. One in ten Mercedes S-Class models sold last year was a Maybach. The GLS is not the first of the company’s SUVs to get the Maybach specification. The 99-limited edition G 650 Landaulet gets all the credit for that.

AMG's with V12 engines are gone my firend, even future Pagani won't be with V12. Only Maybach 600/650 models will be with V12.

I think there was an interview with AMG boss Tobias where he said they are developing a new V12 with a 700hp output because for some AMG customers V8 no matter how good just doesn't cut it.

Built in Alabama? Good luck MB.

Yes, but lately he said this:

"The executive also hinted at the end of AMG-tuned V12 engines by saying the market has changed and “We still have V12 aficionados but they’re more into Maybach.”

If they are developing new V12, Horacio Pagani would said that already.

Also on the never happening new V12:

"There won't be a new V12 but it will be kept up to date," he explained. "It will be like the G-Class, it won't die but it will be kept up to date." -Bernhard Heil, vice president of powertrains for Mercedes-Benz

The Alabama built GLE and GLS's I've seen have been just fine. Then they seemed to have relapsed when the W205 C-class launched. The initial builds had several fit/finish issues that didn't get fully resolved until about 8 months into production.

If they’re relying on the USA supplier chain just how competitive will it be with the likes of a Bentayga?

In a prospective LWB GLS Maybach, a V8 would either be under-powered or too noisy under moderate acceleration.

Combined with the EQ technology a V8 will be able to outperform any antiquated V12. Developing a new one would be costly considering the limited applications.

Totally agree. There is no real need for a V-12 at this point other than prestige.
