Bentley is currently in the midst of a process that sees the carmaker introducing the first all-new two-door and four-door models since the early 2000s. It all started with the 2018 Continental GT that debuted at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, with the Continental GT Cabriolet version set to arrive soon. However, once the two-door family is complete, Crewe will deliver the new Flying Spur.

As it has happened with the last major revamp of the outgoing model, the Continental prefix used for the early versions of the luxury sedan will no longer be around, with the four-door simply keeping the Flying Spur badge.

A prototype of the 2019/2020 Bentley Flying Spur has now been spotted doing its thing on the Nurburgring, with the respectable camouflage on the car designed to make this look like the soon-to-be-replaced model. And while the styling changes will be evolutionary, you shouldn't let the appearance of the test car play any tricks on you.

The newcomer will borrow the modular platform serving the second generation of the Porsche Panamera, albeit coming with slightly different measurements - for instance, the wheelbase will be more generous, delivering the expected cabin room.

Nevertheless, just like in the case of the Conti, Crewe will maintain the W12 tradition. However, since the outgoing model already came in V8 trim, such an engine will also be offered on the new machine.

Regardless of the cylinder count, an eight-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels should be offered as standard.

And now that the Bentley Bentayga has introduced the brand to the plug-in hybrid world, new energy aficionados will be able to purchase the Flying Spur in gas-electric trim.

As the 2018 Continental GT has shown, the generation change will bring a host of new technologies to the vehicle, with the list ranging from a three-chamber air suspension and a 48-volt anti-roll system to a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a digital dashboard and matrix LED headlights.

When it comes to the cabin of the lavish four-door, the rumor mill talks about the interior showing quite a few differences to the 2018 Continental GT, but it's still too early to tell.

The new Bentley Flying Spur should make its debut late this year, but the Brits could also introduce the luxury saloon in the first quarter of 2019.

This rendering is nothing but bait. It's completely off.
Saw it lightly camoed in Weissach, lately. I guess, there's gonna be some controversy about it ... which is a good thing.

Various reports in the automotive press have alluded to the most extensive implementation yet of Bentleys' "Superforming" aluminium pressing procedure. Highly precise, sharp creasing. And an element that substantially accentuates the exterior of the new Conti GT.

Appealling stance, looking considerably lower and wider than the present Flying Spur. Is it perhaps a tad shorter as well ? Some 5300+ mm in length is a bit much...

Still...It shocked me when I recently read just how much money Bentley Motors is losing in terms of average (lack of) revenue per unit sale.

Rumours have it that the VAG decision makers will substantially reinvent the brand and that the new Conti GT and Flying Spur will be the last cars that represent the "old VAG-umbrelled Bentley". It is speculated that all future products will be Porsche/Audi developed PPE BEV matrix based vehicles.

It should be a successful car for Bentley Motors:

Hopefully not only as an image builder, but in commercial terms as well.

...and will it compel more than a few M-B AMG S63/S65 and BMW M760i or Alpina B7 shoppers to visit their nearest local Bentley showroom ?

I don’t think Bentley, in the revolutionary time in our industry will become profitable anytime soon. The Bentayga was simply a failure. I still can’t believe that car turned out the way it did. Not just product, but the whole chain of command made mistakes: sales, production, product, design, quite astonishing.

I do wonder how the revamped economies of scale pertaining to the sourcing of the (primarily) Porsche-developed MSB matrix will materialize in comparison to the old VAG D1 platform, Phaeton-based Conti GT & Flying Spur predecessors. And in the not too distant future, the rumoured Bentley EV 4 door sedoupe underpinned by the highly versatile Porsche/Audi developed PPE BEV large car matrix may prove to be financially viable from the offset. We'll see.

I wasn't aware that the Bentayga was a "failure" ? I find it an exceedingly ugly gargantuan. VAGs' most unbecoming SUV. Embarrassing actually. But I was under the impression that they flourish sales-wise in the Chinese and ME markets.

Their China strategy hasn't produced the results it should.

"But what comes next? Bentley’s effort to jump on the SUV bandwagon with the Bentayga has faltered after the 2016 introduction, with sales last year actually declining in contrast to most new SUV models, which go from strength to strength. Among other failings, critics fault the carmaker for a bad dealer strategy in China, which led to thousands of unsold cars there."

Failure might be a too strong word but the Bentayga has not reached its goals. Their production scale up from around 3000 to over 5000 vehicles, the resulting dealer stock situation, the introduction of the diesel, the design, the aftersales. Many factors have not come close to reaching their goals.

I think I'm going to like the Flying Spur better than the coupe. The wide front end fits the sedan better IMO. I have yet to see the coupe though so there's that.

In a recent interview, Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark is being cryptic. The only statement that was clear is that Bentley will not be producing a sportscar.

Hmmm-I thought that the Porsche Taycan-based EV 4 door sedoupe was confirmed. It's not a sportcar per se, I know. I personally hope that further SUVs' are not in Bentleys' pipeline.
