3 Series (G50) [Spy shots] 2027 BMW 3 Series (G50)

The eighth generation of the BMW 3 Series range consists of the BMW G50 (sedan version) and BMW G51 (wagon version, marketed as 'Touring') compact executive cars. It is to be unveiled and launched in 2026, with the next-generation M3 set to launch the year after. It will feature a new, minimalist design inspired by BMW's Vision Neue Klasse concept, and will be offered with both internal combustion and purely electric powertrains, though on different platforms.
The i3 in outline is like a miniature i7.
The rear Hofmeister looks more resolved more like the i7/7 with the sharper cut of the Vision Neue-Klasse and less like the i5/5.

i3 is more cab-forward in design like the i5, but also in proportions (shorter dash-to-axle) so I don't see any i7 in it.

It'll look amazing. But please BMW... why the useless fixed glass roof
Definitely used data from customers and saw that most people don’t open it. That’s the problem with data driven design, probably the same reason they rid of the iDrive knob. Everyone other than me would use the touchscreen in my G30, no one would go for the knob.

I'm sure there's data that suggests that, but a much more significant data point was likely that these fixed glass roofs are cheaper to manufacture and install, as they need to cut costs wherever they can while trying to uphold quality elsewhere like common touch points etc

I believe another reason the OEMS do it to create more headroom in EVs. A folding sunroof would make the ceiling even lower than no sunroof at all. And a non moving glass roof with no headliner/isolation/etc creates the most interior space.

I suppose you can make the glass slide over the actual roof, but that's ugly and would severely affect aero I'd imagine.

Yeah but this isn't an EV this is an ICE car, and the X3 similarly lost the power sunroof as well. It's just a quick cost-cutting method because they saw customers buying Teslas and being wooed by the massive sunroof (even though they ALL complain about the heat it generates in the day)

Yeah I mean obviously it’s because it’s cheaper, but using this data gives them a very reason to do it. I’m sure they wouldn’t have gotten rid of it if everyone used it all the time.

They recently just said they won’t get rid of the volume knob because their data says people use it a lot. Not sure why they need to use data from millions of cars to come to that conclusion, but nothing about the modern German automakers makes sense.

Funny, in nearly 15 years of running 3ers, I’ve probably opened the sunroof a dozen times. I use the iDrive controller and satellite buttons on every trip.

You can get a CFRP roof on the current M340i/M340d as an option. Probably the new M350 will offer the option too. Interchanging between the two is probably cheaper from an engineering standpoint?
