I-Pace [Official] Jaguar I-Pace

The Jaguar I-Pace nis a battery-electric crossover SUV produced by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) under their Jaguar marque. The I-Pace was announced in March 2018, European deliveries began in June 2018 and North American deliveries started in October 2018. Amid slowing sales and a change in corporate vision, Jaguar has announced that the I-Pace is to be discontinued by 2025.
Jaguar South Africa has announced that it is rolling out 82 new public charging stations for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across South Africa, effectively linking up the country’s major cities.

Good that Jaguar are taking matters into own hands and installing charging points at convenient and safe places like JLR dealerships. I doubt many prospective iPace owners would be brave enough to charge at a suburban gas station while sitting in the car. It could make you a sitting duck for a robbery.

Last week AutoExpress did range test on two identical i-Pace. The test high light that current EVs are still early adopter products won't be viable for 90% of private buyers until solid state batteries are here and car can fully charge in 15min.

Below is the battery consumption of the two identical i-Pace.

Official Range:
Up to 292 miles WLTP

Estimated range at the start of the journey

Blue: 252 miles Red: 269 miles

Range consumption during the first 61 miles

Blue: 32 miles | Red: 121 miles

Range left after 198 miles

Blue: 12 miles | Red: 56 miles

Discrepancy between official and real life range

Blue: 28% | Red: 23%

Worth being aware of is that both cars were pre-condition e.i fully charged and warm right before the start of the journey. If you start your journey in an EV that's sat freezing cold overnight, the range is considerably poorer. During winter some hybrids don't even start in EV mode until the battery has warmed.

Furthermore the drivers had to install, on their phones, apps for different charging station providers so that they have options. Had Tesla not built a supercharging network their car would not have been viable in expansive countries such as the USA.

This is quite eye opening and different from long journey I did in my diesel during Christmas a few years ago. Full tank range is 500 miles, the journey was 469 and and I arrived with 31 miles range to spare having averaged 68mph.

I drove the I-Pace today at Millbrook proving grounds.

Unlike many U.K race circuits that are flat former airfields. Millbrook have layouts that are extremely undulating, tight and twisty with gradient that will made me nauseous from pushing that iPade extremely hard.

Unfortunately I couldn't take photos as tamper proof security tape was put over my phones lenses. On the grounds I spotted about 20 8-Series and equally as many new X5s.

About the I-Pace:

It is stupid fast. Think of a speed in your head and you will hit it in no time. I topped 110mph but at the feathering of the throttle the car was willing to go much faster and very quickly.

The car has relentless grip and extremely high limits. High speed ride on one of the track layouts with a racing driver, there wasn't just the smell of rubber but smoke from the tyres!

Weight is disguised so well that you forget that it's a 2,150kg crossover. Thanks to torque vectoring, it's so agile that you can drive it like a 5 door hatchback. It's remarkably more able than the Model S and a Jaguar in every sense.

While it has air suspension, the ride quality isn't serene but strike a good balance to please both those who like sporty saloons and those who prefer comfortable daily drivers.

The runflat Pirelli P Zero's have relentless grip but the tyre roar spoil the silent cabin. Neither does it help that it has 22 inch alloys!

EV factoids:

During winter pre-conditioning is essential or else you'll start with 30% less charge. Battery performance is optimal above 22 degrees celsius. In other words if you arrive to a friend's house with a toasty car with 60 miles left on a freezing day, you might only have 40 miles at your disposal the next morning if you haven't charged it overnight.

The longevity of batteries is preserved by not discharging to zero too often. Therefore EVs, unlike ICE cars, shouldn't be driven to zero range but instead be charged frequently. If you can't charge at home or at work then an EV isn't for you.

Not only that but I think @Centurion was in my group (Green Lanyards) and we even had a chat! Amazing.

Did you see my grey M2 in the car park?

I was about to say that I saw a grey M2 in the parking lot as I was heading out for a jolly drive in the V6 F-Type.

I had a pink lanyard and was wearing a black Mercedes Petronas jacket:D I was in the 11:00am group.

What did you think about the iPace??
My biggest take away is that today, chassis technology are very defining. AWD, adaptive suspension and torque vectoring makes cars capable of things that were unimaginable 20-30 years ago. The difference between cars with and without those technologies is night and day.

Ah, maybe we did not meet then. Did we chat whilst queuing for the F-Type. Eventually got around to test driving it (3.0 V6 convertible). That things sounds amazing. Puts my M2 to shame.

The 110mph was a red herring as I believe someone else (in our green group) was also naughty and went over the 100mph limit ;) LOL.

The car amazed me. I was shocked. Did not expect it to be that capable. The pro driver scared me. He drove the i-Pace as well if not better than the other Championship Pro driver that took me round Mercedes Benz World in an E63 AMG saloon.

It then translated incredibly well to the Alpine handling circuit. I deliberately placed myself directly behind the pace/lead car and it was awesome.

What an amazing experience day that was. Jaguar were amazing hosts. We were in the 08:30am group and hang breakfast but hung around long enough to have lunch too! All very nice Nom. Nom.

Our group was first of the day on the Cone test and I was third in line. I topped my group with 50500 points and a time of around 47 seconds. How did that compare to your group?

My brother and I had a massive laugh in the F-Type too. It's so much drama. The farts, burps and crackles during hard acceleration from standstill are so very dramatic but yet when you look at the speedo you are just doing 40-50mph.

It put into perspective just how quick the i-Pace it. Floor it and 60mph is smashed in no time. Never the less it was pleasant to hear a genuine exhaust note for once. I drove the 2L petrol iPace which has speaker blasting the fake sound of an NA I6 into the cabin.

Would you be confident enough to hammer your M2 around the Alpine circuit the way you did the i-Pace? I was at the back of my group and backed off a few times so that I could accelerate very hard.

Unfortunately I didn't take the honour of topping the cone test. My score was 46,500. However the guy that came first had done similar challenge before.

The Pro driver who drive took me for a high speed ride was very good too but in all fairness the iPace grips, accelerates, brakes and changes direction so well that you can drive it as if it's a fictional car in Burnout Paradise.

.......Would you be confident enough to hammer your M2 around the Alpine circuit the way you did the i-Pace?....

Errr. No! The i-Pace inspired confidence. The grip was incredible and the turn in defied a car of that size. The turning circle also look tight for its size.

I felt the weight more around the Alpine course more so than the Cone challenge but it was so fleet of foot despite it, and never felt it's true weight.

We had a 2 tonne Mercedes ML320CDI once upon a time and that felt like 3 tonnes in comparison!

Driving the iPace reminded me of when I drove a Porsche Cayman S with PDK at the Porsche experience centre. It can be like a hooligan in ways that would result in a crash in most other cars. Driving it I had a great sense of invincibility!

Readjusting my driving in the F-Type I quickly came to terms with feeling the odd rear tyre loose contact with the surface when accelerating or cornering hard on the uneven b-roads.

...

I'd also relish the opportunity to try! Would be cool to book out those elements of the proving ground and take your own car round. I believe it may be possible as one of my friends took his 1M there.

One of the worst proportioned cars I have ever seen, LMAO

It's not a classic beauty. The proportions are the results of Jaguar trying a build a car that will appeal to a wide customers base: From sedan and coupe to SUV and estate buyers.

The XJ replacement will be Jaguar's next electric car and its design is likely to be less hamstrung by compromises.

Makes sense, the car looks like it was made and then put under a large press to flatten and widen it....

I think it looks great in the flesh though the rear does have similarities with a Toyota Avensis, much like the taxi I followed to work this morning! LOL.

The i3 isnt particularly pretty either but both EVs have their appeal BECAUSE they are different and unusual. Unlike the Tesla.

The great thing about the i-Pace is it has a unique EV type exterior but with a classic car interior (a JLR one at that). Not some stupid iPad pro in the middle. Although the JLR has two touchscreens. Not a fan of touchscreens in a moving vehicle at all.
