5 Series [Spyshots] BMW 5 Series F10 Facelift Spy Information

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.

^ Yes, those are optional LED headlights with squared corona rings (ala 6er, not ala 7er LCI!).

5-Series is hands down the best looking in this segment. If I had to choose one car from the midsize exec class, it would be the 5 without batting an eye. So classic and modern and timeless. 550i M for me ;)

Like the 7, I don't expect too many cosmetic changes to the 5. Those LED'S are going to look awesome.

For me the only weakest part in 5er design is the headlights, not a a fan of the soft curves - it is like a squished fruit. Here is to hoping for something more well defined.

The cluster design stays the same yet the inside graphics (incl LED eyebrow) is changed even in xenon headlights, while LED headlights will have inside graphics very similar to 6er, since the LED projectors are of the same type. What gives the LCI 5er more concentrated & angry look is the 5erGT-like sharp crease just above the headlight cluster, and the redesigned panel around the grille (the "beak" is gone) and the air intake design.

The LCI car has much more aggressive glare than the pre-LCI current car.

Eni, what do you mean by no more "beak" exactly?

The bulging part / panel (running from the hood towards the air intake) between the headlight clusters, where the kidney grille & license plate holder are located. E39 5er & E60 5er had it too - yet executed differently.

The treatment around the grille & headlight clusters on LCI 5er is now similar to the one on 5er GT. The bulge is still there yet not as beak-like looking.

Also, Eni, is it me or is the grille slightly smaller looking in the FL spy pics?

BTW, the 5er with M pack has no 'beak':

Ah, I see. Thanks. I actually kind of like the "beak", or at least, the general idea of it since I always felt something was missing with that super flat face of the M Sport, now I know. It does give the car too much of a "hippo" bloat look (the F10's beak), but if the facelift can eliminate it while not having such a flat surface, it'd be perfect IMO.

Guys, after looking very carefully I think I've come to the conclusion that the grille is entirely new on the FL....
SKY?

I'm not sure the 5er LCI kidney grille is of different shape, yet it certainly has less vertical slats than the current grille, making the kidneys more aggressive. They've done the same thing on 7er LCI.

Any diesel upgrades planned for the LCI ?
My car just further refined is what I can see in the pictures... and that's great :)

I tell you what I see. I see an entirely different "nose". The creases you marked in red are there, and they look very nice. The "pointy" nouse the regular 5er (and the upper part is on the M5 too) is gone. I see a flat nose ala 5er GT, with the kidneys retaining their shape, but with less slats and with different outline. The air intake seems to bee a mix between the 3er and 7er.

The changes seem to be very accurate and precise. They are touching strictly the key areas.

EDIT: Now I see my own avatar. The nouse seems to take some cues from the CS.

Yeah, well spotted! It indeed appears to take specific Concept CS details....
The nose is flat, yeah, but the grille will be more 3D, yet obviously not connected to the headlights like on the F15 and F30

The diesel line-up couldn't possibly be any more high tech, no? Don't think much will change there. The engines in cars are constantly being updated anyways, it's not like they wait for a facelift with that anymore.

BTW I think I know what the rear lights camo is hiding. The camo is just of the outer part of the cluster. I think BMW is gonna change the way the lava tubes curve to make them look in the same way than the F30 realights and the Active Tourer ones. Which, in fact, come from the Concept CS rear lights graphics.

Regarding the interior, the only thing I´d ask BMW to change is the steering wheel. Not that is not good looking, but it is not better than the Audi or MB steering wheels. I think they need a new approach.

^^ Yeah I'm not too riveted by BMW steering wheels on the 5er at least, I love the M-B 3-spoke wheel.

Aside from that, you want to know why BMW is CRUSHING M-B in design these days? It's as simple as VISUALIZING WHAT THEY ARE TELLING YOU:

Can you imagine if BMW completely changed the front of the 5er? I mean COMPLETELY, new hood, completely different lights setup and shape, entirely new grille design and approach (not talking about a slight reshape and slat changes), reshaped the rear lights to go along with the usual new graphics, re-shaped the creases on the rear FENDER, changed every panel but the roof and front doors, did a huge interior overhaul? That would make it seem as if BMW is admitting a massive mistake to the 5er, right?

Well, guess what, they're not doing about any of that, but M-B is to the E-Class. See the level of class BMW exudes if for nothing else due to how confident the designers are in the timelessness and relevance in their designs? I only wish M-B could be so forward thinking and tactful when they initially design their cars these days, so they don't have to scramble to change around the entire thing, mid-cycle.

^ It's not like that is something new or anything. I'm thinking E46 3er for example, they changed the whole front completely pretty much; kidneys, lights, hood and bumper. Everything was new. And not because the pre facelift was such a bad design...
Same with the E65 7er, but I think they did change that because of all the bad press. So it can mean different things I guess.

E65 WAS a total about-face redesign, due to massive bad "street cred" per-se. That's what M-B's redesigns remind me of, the same thing that BMW did with the E65, i.e they don't have confidence in their initial design. When a car is substantially redesigned for a mere facelift it will either mean that the look is outdated by design idiom terms of the manufacturer (i.e showing bad planning by the team) now, or that it's too flawed or non-timeless enough to stay strong on the market.

E46 did change the front (for the worse, IMO), but it was still kind of normal facelift stuff. It's not like they changed every panel but the front doors and roof. The E46 had an excuse though, as it was kind of the in between period between E39 beautiful pure BMW era, and the following messy and avantgarde Bangle era. They mistakenly tried to "Bangle-ize" the front of the E46.

What MB did to the W204 was okay for me. The rear stayed pretty much the same, and the front of the car changed a little bit. The interior was where the "revolution" took place, but in that case, the old interior needed an upgrade SO badly that I thought it was for the better.

What they're doing to the E, especially if it's a sports grille, is pretty bad though.

Due in spring 2013.

Our photographers have managed to take the first spy shots with the upcoming BMW 5-Series facelift due in spring 2013.
Photos are showing the Touring variant which will get a revised front bumper, a slightly bigger kidney grille and updated rear skirt. Judging by the light camouflage on the taillights, expect some minor changes in the layout but nothing significant.
BMW will also make some alterations to the car’s mirror caps and headlamps, along with some subtle interior changes. Various reports are indicating that the 535i model with its 302 hp 6-cylinder, 3.0-liter turbocharged engine will get a power boost to 316 hp (235 kW).
