SL-Class [Spyshots] 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (R231) Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.
I wouldn't say there's no hope. It certainly isn't the best looking in the family, but it's not horrible.

This angle actually doesn't look bad at all. It is essentially a blend of styling elements from both the S-Coupé and AMG GT.

The updated Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster is expected towards the end of 2015, and among other things may come with modified bumpers, new LED headlights and different taillights.

According to our information the SL may also receive new wheels, new side skirts, and a reversed grille (upper grille edge shorter, lower longer). The SL 65 and SL 63 AMG remain the top models. The market launch is expected in March 2016, while they may become available to order as early as November 2015.

It kind of does if you compare the spy pictures. Looks like they might be able to salvage it. No hope for the SLC though that needs a complete reworking.

I disagree, the SLK to SLC is much easier fix than the SL IMO. There is nothing wrong with the proportions of the SLK. All it needs is a smaller grille and lights up front. Otherwise it is perfect imo. Now the SL has goofed up proportions and a too much overhang in front, too much bulk and those things wont' be corrected during a facelift.

Is the SL63 AMG going to persevere with the existing drivetrain or getting the Hot-V V8 engine and the MCT found in the C63 AMG?

Good question Wunderkind, I would hope that they would change to the new V8 to reduce the econ/emissions. As for the styling I am still hugely disappointed they havent done enough to change those dreadful looking backlights, the worse styling aspect of this car.

True, but new taillights would entail a new boot-lid, rear quarter panels, rear bumper, and the trimmings inside the trunk. It would have been a huge investment with questionable benefits.

I hope they would have spent money on a new dashboard though.....................................

MB might modify the top half of the dash, similar to the GLE, or they just put a bigger screen on where the old screen used to be, much like the face lifted CLS.

I still don't think there is any hope for this car, but look on the bright side...the next one will be a stunner if the current design team stays in place. I was supposed to be driving a SL, not a 650i. I'm still not over MB's fumbling of this car. If they could fix the proportions and the front end they might be onto something. Still though with the S Coupe sitting next to it, I don't see me ever owning this generation SL.

M

If Mercedes can bring out a stunner of a coupe like the new S Coupe then I have high hopes that the next generation of SLC and SL will once again be beautiful roadsters.

Pictures posted by DJRaze99 show that the SL is going to be a very attractive car IMO. There is nothing wrong with the rear end except its a bit familiar because of the resemblance from R230. I like the sharp lines on the car that makes it an aggressive little sports car. The longish tail and a bit extra front overhang create flamboyance in the SL design IMO and I like it very much. In fact the long hood-short deck Mercedes sports cars like the SLS look odd from some angles. The only problem with the current SL was the disjointed (ugly) front and that's going to be solved with an attractive new face, I hope. Where the beautiful S coupe resembles the C coupe and the upcoming E coupe may also have the same familiarity, along with some other current models also sharing the same design language, the upgraded SL shall look quite distinctive in the MB stable which is more than OK for me.

The facelifted Mercedes SL63 AMG has spied been in Germany.

Looking more redefined than its predecessor, the facelifted model has a new front fascia which draws inspiration from the AMG GT. As a result, there's a more curvaceous front bumper with a revised grille that is flanked by new headlights. The styling changes are less noticeable out back as the only differences appear to be a modestly revised bumper and updated taillights.

Under the hood, the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 engine will likely carryover and produce 585 PS (430 kW) and 900 Nm (663 lb-ft) of torque. It should enable the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds before hitting an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

The AMG models look better of course, that won't change with the facelift. That SL63 could actually look good if they fix the front, which it appears they're trying to do.

I like the exterior of the SL a lot more now, than when it debuted. It really has a bold presence.
Still, it seems to lack something over the sexier competition. There is nothing really dramatic about this design, which it should be, considering the price point. The interior is where it needs the biggest fix. if they plaster a dam tablet looking screen on the dash, I'll be pissed for sure.
